Working on my 348 ac today and discovered a leaking high side schrader valve. As soon as I remove the cap I see gas coming out. Any ideas on how to fix this, already tried to tighten the valve to no avail. Do they make a schrader valve extension that I could screw on over the old one to at least stop the leak than deal with it when it's time for a recharge. My car still has R12 and I don't want to change it to 134. And ideas fellas?

the place that I take my car to reclaims and reused the r12.
you know like when you do an engine out service. (my 348 had r12).

I'd fix it now probably save you money. r12 is big dollars.. plus they have leak detectors to check the system

Nothing you can do about it mate. The seal must be worn on the valve.

Screw the cap back on and leave it be till next service. If the gas leaks out before hand, replace the valve and recharge then.

You can take it to an a/c specialist who will recover the gas, replace the valve, vac down and recharge for you. But it will cost you.

I would leave it be, with the cap on it's only leaking VERY slightly. It may be months or years before it totally leaks out to the point where you will not have cold a/c.

They make real brass caps with o ring seals inside if you think that would help. You find them on residential AC systems. It's the same fitting.

Thanks guys, I'll just leave it until it leaks out. At least r12 prices are coming down.

    Hi Thomas,

Prices coming down on R-12 ?? That's not what I'm being told - across the auto repair board. What am I missing here?

    Cheers, Hank
