Well, like all Ferraris they need to be in good tune to be able to make any conclusions, but I pushed mine quite frequently in the California summer weather and to be honest temperatures were no issue. Nor have I heard temperature issues from any of my not inconsiderable number of clients who own them.

If the 288 GTO has an Achilles heel its the bell-housing lining, but that's easily, inexpensively & permanently fixed.

    And the Gearbox....
    And the Injectors...
    And the magnesium Distributor Housings...

I have some spare bel-housings, one isn´t protected.
Just protect the magnesium simply with Electrophoretic deposition??

I have found the 288 GTO gearbox itself to be quite sturdy, after all, essentially the same one was re-used in the USA F40. Stiff & notchy for the first few miles, yes, but nothing that takes away from a satisfying drive.

The injectors simply need to be cleaned & re-calibrated, not a real issue. They are after all, 27, 28 years old.

Tha ratios are the same, but just two Main Shaft Gears are the same (3rd and 4th). The Gears were made stronger for the F40. And the F40 has an Oil Cooler for the Gearbox, the GTO dosen´t . This makes the F40 Gearbox stronger.

And as fae as I know, it is not possible to re-calibrate the injectors. I gave them to some shops to clean and re-calibrate but they all said, it is not possible.

It is done here in the USA often by the Ferrari dealer (Newport Beach).

If you are going to paint a 288 GTO Cocaine White, why not your entire collection?

Is that particular GTO still white? (I was under the impression that all the non-red GTO's have been turned back to red.)

This particular GTO was painted white by DK Engineering for the customer in recent years. I believe it remains that way.

The cars that have been returned to red (such as the 2 silver cars) were painted silver in the new-car period and have been returned to red years ago.

I'm finding something terribly vexing regarding 288 power figures.

According to the 'numbers' and road tests, a 288 is right around as quick as a 360 modena, but of course with a bit more torque.

A solid 360 will dyno 320bhp at the rear wheels on the dynojet type dyno. Where I'm hearing a 288 will dyno well over 320 at the wheels despite the factory rating it as having 400bhp at the flywheel which would normally yield no more than 320-330 at the wheels due to drivetrain loss. Seeing as how a 288 is not really much quicker than a 360, I definitely call foul. Anyone have an ACTUAL dyno sheet at the wheels for a GTO? I certainly cannot find one and all I'm hearing is anecdotal 'evidence'.

I just wanted to show, how the 288 Cylinderhead looks like.

The Head was off, because one Exhaust Valve was burnt. Because this is an Engine Out Job, we done a big Service and some Detailing.

And please Guys check the Suspension Bushings!!! After 27 Years they can be porous.

Thanks for that. Good advice too. At current age ALL systems should be checked.

I just got the 2012 edition of Keith Martin's Sports Car Market pocket price guide. The 288 GTO os shown as a Grade B car whereas the F40 is Grade A. What is the justification for that?

The GTO is about 3 times more rare than the F40. In fact the GTO is even slightly more rare than the 275 GTB 4-cam (280 built).

The GTO if far more beautiful than the F40 (not just in my opinion but according to automotive journalists as well)

The GTO had revolutionary technical innovations (first Ferrari production car to have longditudinal V8 and first to have twin turbos) whereas the F40 was an evolution of the GTO.

The GTO's value is higher than the F40's (not that price alone should necessarily reflect desirability)

There is no doubt that the F40 is a rare, powerful, iconic car that is a thrill to drive. But, the GTO checks all the same boxes (and then some). They should both be Grade A collectibles in my opinion.

    What do you think?
