And no, it's not me whining as I've been accused of by some friends.

Inside the passenger compartment I can hear what sounds like a noisy speedometer cable - kinda like what I heard as a kid in my parent's old Chevy. Sorry, don't know how to describe it any other way than that.

It appears to be coming from forward of the center air vents.

Before I start ripping the dash apart anyone else had this issue? I'm guessing it's a fan motor and hoping a few shots of WD40 will quell my annoyance.

    Thanks.

Before you rip the dash apart, try looking in the front trunk, where the fresh air inlet chamber is located. The "squirrel cage" for the fan is right there, and you might be able to pinpoint the source of the noise. If you're lucky, something (a leaf?) might have blown in there and can be easily removed.

Does the noise stop or change in pitch as you turn the fan on/off/high/low?

    Miltonian,

Thanks for the reply. I don't notice a change in the tone with the different fan settings. I do notice it with engine RPM. Which is odd.

Area of the center dash vent? Noise changes with engine rpm? Is it possible that it's coming from your stereo?

Another thought might be that you have an air pocket in the coolant lines to your heater core, and you need to bleed the cooling system - but I wouldn't think this would make a "whining noise". There is also an electric water pump that recirculates coolant through the heater core - maybe this pump is making the noise, particularly if it is "cavitating" through an air pocket.

I have a front seat whine above 120 mph. Only happens when my wife is riding along.

    Lmao!

You sure that's not when she sees the maintenance every 3-8 years or 15k miles?

Not sure if it's the same, but I've also noticed a whine from mine over the last couple of months. I would describe mine more as the kind of whine I'd expect from an electric motor. Changes with engine rpm, although I've not figured out where mine comes from - not even sure if it's in front of me or behind.

    Moiluck,

Actually, it's higher up in the dash. Sounds like it's right behind the center vents.

    Paul,

it's there with the radio on or off -- but thanks about the ground. I needed a reminder to check that as I do get a whine from the radio when it's on, plus I need to look at the driver's side woofer as it's not working. But I rarely have the radio on.. the car makes it's own music which I find more tasteful than the radio.

Thanks for the ideas.... still searching.

remember when checking the non functioning woofer, if the speaker is present and it works (touch the 2 speakers wires to a small battery....should make a quick "pop" sound), then next most likely cause is the area of the wiring harness plug from the door to the car body by the door hinge.

Thanks. I'll have to check that harness. The woofer is good. I pulled it and stuck it in a working enclosure in my house so I know it's good. I'll have to look for that harness tonight.

Finally! I found it. I guess the stars aligned today and/or the hangover I had this am made me really pay attention. :)

    Points go to Moiluck!

It's coming from the shifter. It's really prevalent in 3rd gear around 4k rpm.

Now the challenge is how to silence it. It doesn't appear anything is loose but it's almost like it's vibrating. Any ideas?

Not sure of the differences in a cable operated shifter like the 348, but on my 355, it required replacement of all the various bushings to tighten things up and eliminate any rattles and buzzes from the shifter mechanism
