Um yeah, So I think the engine (in any of the various states shown) qualifies as "news". Very cool!

Also, interesting to see a 4-ring piston design. Is that typical of Ferrari of this era? I thought that was stuff that was used many years prior as well as in radial engine design, circa WWII

What is so cool here, too, is the historical ramifications of this entire find and quest to reunite as much of the original machine as possible. It is both archaeological and scientific. And it makes a great story. I'm very interested in this unfolding.....

The last owner traded a refrigerator for it. I bet it cost Tom just a little bit more.

Congrats to the Ferrari doer, not the chatter!

Excellent. So now we will see a complete car soon, no? Fans of this story can't wait! :)

Has the body been re-fab'd yet? The chassis restored? Or were you waiting for the engine owner to relent before starting? I'm not prone to prying but this is the one thread I really look forward to seeing progress on. Cheers!

Don't feel bad, I doubt I would have been outbid.
I had 2 esnipe bids in on the 340 chassis, my maximum bid was in excess of $262,000

The engine was a small fortune

    Rest easy

How bad was the rebuild? Did it need everything everything? Or was it straight forward for the most part

Was the price of the correct numbered engine in the ball park?
Did Shaughnessy sell the car on without restoring it?

Would Ferrari's Classic Dept. make a new replacement block if the original was not buyable and how would they number it? I couldn't believe the estimate someone gave for a block--surely it couldn't be more than $100,000.

As far as the registration issue, I had a few instances, of similar paper mix-ups. When I bought a gullwing in Toronto in the Sixties, I was on the bridge over to Detroit when customs noticed the chassis number on the title was one number off the chassis number on the car. But since I was holding up traffic they let me go and the Michigan DMV thought "ah, what's one number off" and registered it Turned out the guy who sold it had two gullwings and gave me the wrong title. Must have been hell for the buyer of the second car.
Better yet is when this guy bought an Abarth Zagato out of my front yard. We didn't have a title so we wrote a Certifico di Originato (sp?) using words from an Italian menu. I don't know if the DMV fell for that one, maybe if they didn't know Italian food...

I have no idea what the status of the car is, other than postings here by owners, but a competition motor, regardless of serial number (well, let's even include a basic production car motor) is a number FAR in excess of $100k.

What used to fly in the past, doesn't anymore, mainly from a government computer system idea. Although, I am confident what you state is true, you mention your experience with stuff like this. I had to go through this recently with a Dino. Navigating through the state titling system is not easy. And I am in TX, which is a pretty easy State to work with.

The outside of the engine looks pristine but the boxed internals appear to have been left out in a field to rot. There must be an interesting story here....
