Yep, the 3 month personal import rule - you had to demonstrate "use" during that time and had to agree to not sell the car for 12 months after import. A mate got burnt with a Morgan; he couldn't show "use" so had to modify the car ( additional emission stuff, IIR) - the next car he imported he took it on a cross channel trip, both ways/same day, flashed the ticket & all was OK. I love public servants...

no..no...nothing.....i was just curious when Greg said the glass dry sump was tourist delivery. Things are so strict nowadays it was hard to imagine it was possible!

 

I have a sneaking suspicion that back in 1977 it was just that you had to be overseas and it was RHD; but I could be wrong.

Even in 1989 you got a discount on the tax payable when you brought it back. You DID have to show use though. I remember having to prove it to the customs guy which wasnt particularly difficult as it was delivered new at the factory and it came back with 2000 km's on the clock.

 

I knew about the discount. That was huge....remembering, of course, that import duty and sales tax was about an additional 90% added to the value of the car in those days.
