Anybody know if no front plate is a moving violation in MA? How much is the ticket?

I drive a lot in Concord, MA. Cracks me up - you get pulled over for no front plate, but you have bicyclists running 2 & 3 abreast on back roads and they don't get tickets. I guess that front plate missing is a big hazard.

If your state doesn't require your car to have a front plate it doesn't matter what state your driving in you can't be given a ticket for it.
As for lying to the cop, he knew you were speeding, as did you, and was testing you. Cops are control freeks, I have friends who are state police and they HATE when people lie to them. HATE it. You most likely would have been given a warning. When a cop asks you a question they more than likely know the answer but just like to test you. I have gotten out of a few tickets just by telling the truth, example, how fast do you think you were going, too fast I reply, slow it down and be smarter. I never say 80mph, just say too fast. They know you know how fast you were going. Your not lying just not admitting to going over the limit. Plus they want to see if their is anything wrong with you - drunk, high ect. I have found if you respect them they are cool about it. Again, it's about respecting their intelligence. Although you do run into the occasional a**hole, power freak once in a while then your screwed. Piece, Rob

A once in a 50 years event versus some years (e.g. 2005) with five separate hurricanes hitting Florida in one season is a little different.

I keep my front plate in the trunk and haven't been stopped yet in 14 years of driving in CT (heavy knocking on wood), of which the last two have been with antique plates, which may help.

Why does Connecticut insist on labeling its antique car plates "Early American"? I should put the word "Italian" over that!

First off, I never get stopped for no front plate when I am out of state. This works well when you spend time in both MA and NH ;)

Admitting to speeding is risky, how about "officer, I do not want to incriminate myself in case I was slightly over the limit?"

and btw, front plates in MA are going to be very common, they are banning the green plates. Maybe the Governor is behind it lol

CT will let you display a regular plate you just have to keep the antique plates in the car.

How do you do that? Why would you want to have two sets of plates for one car even if DMV allowed that?

    What am I missing here?

Some color matching velcro attachment is all that's needed to appease the law. Pull the plate off when you want to admire your car.
I don't think there is cop on the planet who doesn't know when you are not running a front plate deliberately.
Do I think it's a CS thing to be busted for? Certainly, but tired of fighting city hall.

I get hassled all the time but mostly by the local town police. I have only received warnings of far because it has not happened twice in the same local NH town. They look for any reason to pull us over. Be careful with velcro. I have a velcro setup for inspection and it's fine for low speeds but once you get up to highway speeds it can rip off. It has happened to me twice. Luckily the plate went under the car and didn't hit anyone behind me. I'm still looking for a better system. I might buy the Plate Clip that is advertised in Forza but I wanted to see one in person before buying it. Anyone own one?

I was pulled over about a year ago for 80 in a 65 on Rt87. The guy was nice and asked some questions about the car. The front plate was in the trunk and I always say that I noticed a missing screw so I took it off rather than lose it.

He ended up giving me a front plate ticket and in a round about way, basically told me that its smart to have a "lesser offense" so that they can give some leniency if they want to.

Ticket was dropped and haven't put it back on since

No gun laws? That's way to scary for me. Most people aren't smart enough to have kids never mind a gun. I get some people collect them and some people like to shoot for the sport, target, but think of how many, most people, have a gun and never take the proper avenues to use one. That scares the piss out of me. And that dumb law of "if you see something suspicious, you can kill it". Glad I live in Mass. The winters I am getting to old for. And no state tax, never understood that one either.

I saw a hot rod a while back at at C&C that had a plate setup where the plate was tucked underneath the bumper when the car was shut off but starting up the car caused a lever (solenoid?) to actuate that rotated the plate into view so that there would be a plate on the car when needed.

I don't know what would be involved to do something like that on an F car but it sure looked slick!

Funny - I recently took delivery of a new car from a dealer in CT and found the front plate and mount in the trunk after I got home. If it is the law, why aren't dealers required to put them on the car before delivering them?

I just happened to see this thread and read it. Yes the police officer probably pulled you over to see and speak with you about the car, maybe even see who you were as 99% of Police Officers don't pull cars over simply because of no front plate. As far as him not giving you a ticket because you said you would contest it, I am surprised. Most officers get paid overtime to go to traffic court so you would be doing him a favor by contesting it and you would still lose in court. It is pretty simple, was the plate on the front or was it not? The Police officer says no it was not, case closed you lose and the officer makes probably $300 for about 10 minutes.

It was a freak thing, I can bet you won't be pulled over again in an exotic for no front plate.

    Just my opinion

I contested a no front plate ticket and won a few months ago, just said car did not come with a plate holder so after ticket I bought one and showed picture with plate on. Judge said he was satisfied. Also on the first appeal the ticketing officer does not come to hearing, they use one officer who does all the cases that day. If you lose on the first appeal and go for a second then the ticketing officer has to come in.

Rhode Island has a 2 plate program. I have never been pulled over for no front plate, BUT I keep the plate between the transmission tunnel and the passenger seat with a broken twist tie on it in case. For all of you with newer cars here is an easy way to mount plates without damaging the front of your cars. http://chairpilotproducts.com/

    Cheers,

    Sam

My Lambos are a 78, 72, and a 71.... before the law. As delivered new they did not and never had a bracket for the plate, only a bumper. Never a bracker or holder available.
Was it expected, when the law went into effect, that you drill/cut your exotic car's bumper? Yikes.

I have had thoughts of curling my plate and mount it in the lower curve, below my bumper on the spoiler. Out of sight when walking anywhere mear it. But perfectly visible from down the road. I guess it's "at least it's there'.

I live near the state police barracks and have 2 towns (I live on the line) with very visible local police. They are cool. I dealt with both towns quite often. Mostly for house alarm :)
I guess half the force have looked in my garage when I'm not home. The other half seen me driving.....around the posted limit. Respect the speed and they won't be on the look out for you.

I wouldn't make that bet. Like I said earlier in this thread I have already been pulled over multiple times in multiple towns in NH (Merrimack, Amherst, and Bedford). I only received 1 written warning from the Merrimack guy. The others let me go after a brief conversation about the car and there being no place to mount it and saying I can put it on the dash for now. I always keep it behind the passenger seat. I now have the Velcro system for inspection and local driving but take it off once I'm out of state or on the Highway.
