I was out today when my rear view mirror just came off the windshield. At first I thought the glue had just come undone but upon closer inspection the glass had actually delaminated where it is attached to the rear view mirror. it looks like it could be glued back on but I wanted to see if my FChat brethren could give me some guidance if this is possible or am I looking at a new windshield? If it can be fixed, what kind of adhesive will do the trick?

Very strange!! Are you sure that the glass delaminated, and it's just not glue residue? Maybe the mount can be moved slightly, and re-mounted with the special glue sold at auto parts stores. If the glass delaminated, the only "proper" way to fix it would be with a new windshield.

Windshield glass is laminated annealed glass. In other words it would be impossible for the mirror to come off and take glass with it without the windshield also cracking and having runs in all directions.

The same thing happened on my old '84 Chevy truck. Definitely took a piece of glass with it. You could just get the adhesive for rear view mirrors at you local auto supply and re-glue the glass piece still attached to the mirror to the divot in the windshield as is should mate perfectly. Worked OK on my truck and you have nothing to lose! Another solution would be to get the kit to repair a chipped windshield. Mix up the resin, put it in the divot and then glue to that.

Remember to remove the mount from the back of the mirror and glue that without the wieght of the rear view mirror. Once dry you can attach the mirror to the mount.

This is fairy common with the vent window latches on Daytonas/246s. When the latch comes off, it pulls some of the glass off with it, leaving a depression in the glass. You can try and reglue it using some of the better mirror adhesives that are out there, but it may just come off again.

    Hey Monte,

    It can be fixed.

Permatex makes a product to reglue the mirror to the windshield. You can find it at pretty much any auto parts stores. http://www.permatexrepair.com/product/rearview It's a pretty simple do-it-yourself job.

The delaminated glass is a bit tougher. To "fix" that, a tiny hole will have to be drilled just over the the delaminated area. This will enable a piston like device to be placed over the hole to draw a vacuum on the air gap between the glass. The piston will hold an acrylic type resin, and when the vacuum is released the resin gets drawn into the delaminaded area. Then pressure in applied to the resin to further fill the delaminated are. The resin is cured with ultraviolet light. Problem is you have to have the equipment to do it. Sorry but it's really not a do-it-yourself job. However a guy by the name of Ron Cook fixes this type of stuff, AND, he's in your area. ;) http://www.repairanyglass.com/ I don't know what he charges, but it's worth giving him a call before you start looking at new windshields.

Unfortunately, I just got off the phone with Ron Cook and the prognosis isn't good. He said he's seen this happen a handful of times and it's not repairable. He advised to try a good marine epoxy first since it's not going to hurt anything and if it works great. If not, I'm back to where I am now with a potential new windshield.

If I need a new windshield does anyone have any good recommendations? Sounds expensive.

Did Ron say where you could source the marine epoxy?

West System by Gougeon Brothers, Inc. You can find it at any good marine store. West Marine carries the product line (no relationship to West System, as far as I know).

check with your insurance agent... windshields are covered under special provisons in many policies if the windshield is compromised in any way, the claims are not chargeable, not having a review mirror with a piece of glass missing should certainly be enough for coverage to kick in... not having a mirror would go to vehicle and passenger safety as would a broken or cracked winshield... which could lead to greater losses for the ins co should things go wrong

in some states there are statues that control how much damage a windshield can have before it becomes illegal to operate a vehicle... it's about a windshield imploading into the passenger compartment...

Pretty sure a bird hit the windshield, flexing the glass ever so much that the glass broke around the mirror mount but leaving no outside damage due to down & feathers. ;-)

reminds me of the time a friend called in a panic, just having ruined the right side wire wheels and suspension of his 330GTS after hitting the curb sideways... my first comment to him was did he see which direction the kid on the skateboard ran off in and that he was very fortunate to not have hit him... :=)

Since the windscreen became an essential component for the airbag system, several states have required that windscreen replacements must be fully covered. Even if the car doesn't have an airbag.

In MA, a mower tossed a rock that chipped my windscreen, and the insurance replaced it without a deductible. (But MA has their own insurance co, after all the regular companies pulled out of the state.)

It's an example of bureaucratic laziness. Rather than quibbling over how much damage to the windshield is "acceptable", they force the insurance companies to replace the glass if it has any kind of damage at all.

Using the West System Marine Epoxy. Expensive as far as epoxies go at $15 but cheaper than a windshield. Just put it on clamped it and going to let it set overnight. Stay tuned.....

Glass coverage is not required in MA - it's optional and always has been.

MA does not have it's own insurance company. We have plenty of competing companies... Liberty Mutual, Hanover, Arbella, Allstate, Amica, Commerce, etc.

Once my big fat head knocked the mirror off my Diablo and it took a chunk of glass with the mount, off the shelf mirror adhesive put the divot back in place with the mirror. And later my big fat head knocked the mirror off the window of my 355 and took a chunk of glass with it and off the shelf mirror adhesive put the divot with the mirror back in place.

The moral of the story is if something drops on the floor get out and pick it up from the other side.
