911 turbo vs 458

We all have different wallets, garage spaces, and needs.

If you have to drive kids around forget the Porsche GT, Turbo, and Ferrari. After the kids have been "taken care of", then comes the sports car. Track, street, weekend driver, daily driver, etc. If space and budget allows for more than one, plenty to choose from. Best

Exactly right. GT3 is in a way a more "authentic" sport car, and a riot to drive. No problem in traffic. Only mod I would make for DD use is less aggressive tires for foul weather driving and less need to warm them up. In spirit and performance I liken it more to a 3-pedal F430 than a 458.

If I had both a 458 and GT3, I would welcome the daily choice, "Which one do I take today?"

As for the turbos as DDs, I can readily understand either the Cayenne or Panamera. Lots of torque to go along with your utility and comfort. Capable performance but not exciting.

I run scorpion snow/ice tires year round on my turbo. First year they are true ice tires, then due to tread wear they work as all season tires in the summer. Rinse, repeat. Same with the cayenne tt. It's a good system.

I suppose it depends on how much snow you get. The 458 sits parked about 5 months a year, it simply can't perform as a dd in my situation. I suppose if you live in Florida or someplace flat with no snow then its no problem.

Let's put it this way, even after heavily modding my 911TT it still hasn't been driven for the last few months.

It feels ancient compared to the 458

But at least it has a six speed manual

 

You are not driving the 911 so what difference does the transmission make?

 

You have difficult choices

 

It's the transmission that makes the car feel ancient.

I have a 458 and an older Turbo Porsche. I like to drive the Turbo Porsche and cannot understand how anybody can call it boring. The looks are a little dedestrian. My car is a 2002 TP that I bought at mecum auction I am amazed it is still so tight and drives as new in 2002. I have had new Porsches in the past, 996 and a 997 veraints of the 911. I wanted some thing with more exciting looks so I moved on to other cars. But I would never call a 911 boring Each year Porsche evolves into a little better drivers car.

The 458 does have more wow factor no doubt about that

The Porsche you can drive it anywhere and park it without anyone noticing you.

 

The car is not boring to me. I would happily take somone out for a ride one day as long as they are wearing their diapers (lol). We all find joy in different places (thank goodness). I love the 458, how fasts it shifts, the feeling of being on rails, and its design, and the Twin Turbo I own will have you tasting your last meal when I put it in launch control.Best

 

Ok, the Turbo might not be as exciting as a 458, but it isn't boring.

I have driven a 997 TTS, and I have to say the car MOVES. It would be the perfect daily driver. I just doesn't sound real good...


I too would get a GT3RS or 458 as a weekend car though.

I said boring in comparision to gt3. Not sure if you have owned or driven gt3. To me they are the true essence of modern porsche.

 

The 458 produces a visceral response due to:

1. Sound
2. Aesthetics/Design

The Turbo lacks these.

 

As an owner of both - I agree 100%. I did install Tubi Exhaust on the Porsche and at least it now sounds better, but still not a Ferrari. Incidentally, with the 458, I had installed a exhaust valve control and when open, the idle is much improved. Best

 

I have C63 Black Series as DD - amazing, amazing car and extremely fun to drive. Get one - if you can find one.

+1 - great car.

Someone besides me has to appreciate the length of a thread questioning the "enjoyment" of cars such as Porsche, Ferrari, and Mercedes, contrasted to Fiat's, Volkswagen's, and the Ford Focus. Celebrate the moment. I suspect most who have the time to spend discussing this most likely enjoy whatever they drive. Best

I have a 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S and it is a great car, but about 1 month ago I drove a friend's 458 Italia and realized what I have been missing. I ordered a 458 Italia the next day.
Now I am waiting. Hope for delivery Feb, 2013. Live and learn. Oh, BTW, I am keeping my Porsche.

 

Where you thinking of keeping the porsche as a daily driver?

 

No, my daily driver is a 335 BMW. My Porsche will stay on as a weekend toy.

 

I have driven 458 and PDK Turbo S back to back on a short track.
Loved both, Ferrari stopped better but you know what - I thought the Turbo S was more fun just because you get the incredible kick when turbos kick in. It also felt faster to me, although it probably is not.
To each his own I guess. I have been bitten the the turbo bug.

 

The Turbo S is faster, it wasn't just your perception. It has AWD so its easier to just nail it coming around a bend.

 

No I have sadly not driven one of these. I should put this on my bucket list
