I spent a fair amount of time riding and driving in the 3 liter GT that sold at the RM auction. The auction price was, I feel, unfortunately low. If the car had been consigned to someone like Kidston it would have easily brought twice the money. The auction price was also unfortunate for the owners of the other few cars, as it set a low benchmark.

Thank you Ed, for your incredible photos. They are rarer than the few remaining ATS cars.

A bit off topic, but isn't it a shame that Italian cars at RM and BJ do not get good money at these auctions. Get a 70's muscle car with half descent paint and a big motor and the price goes thru the roof. Too bad.

PS thanks to all posters, great info and pics.

Just as a fan and observer I did notice that this car got more press than many other famous cars being auction over the past few years. Many articles were written about it and if you do web searches this is the ATS that is most often seen. IMO the car is a bit to obscure, I don't mean that in a negative way, but ATS is just not well know by many collectors. Then there is the economy which is in the tank.

I agree with with you on BJ, it just a big circus, but RM over the years has done very well selling Italian cars, I know for our club they broke the record on a Iso Grifo at more than 250K .

    Hi!

Wow, very rare to see that Pegaso Z-102 Cabriolet Saoutchik (CS 1), first series.

What that Pegaso did in the ATS factory?
Were they glancing at Wifredo Ricart V8?
    Just curious.

    Regards,
    Alvaro.

I'm so glad your dad got you that brownie box camera when you were a little boy....
Your photos on FChat make the site such a pleasure! And not just the 'normal' top-to-bottom coverage of Ferraris (which are some of the best), but some of the really rare & exotic stuff that we would never otherwise see.

You deserve your own forum here......

    thanks again,
    Tritone

It never did have bumpers. Here it is arriving in Costa Rica pre-restoration. That's me behind it with the black cap on.

that was an ATS built on a Mangusta chassis with a body designed by Tom Tjaarda. It had a single cam per bank Serenissima V8. I think it was a running, driving car. You can tell it's a Mangusta from the waistline down, has same body panels but top of car is different. I am not sure if it was built after ATS had failed but maybe wasn't count Volpi thinking of making cars under the Serenissima name?

I wouldn't trust the car's handling after what I know about the Mangusta but maybe if the engine is alloy block it weighs a couple hundred pounds less than the cast iron block cast iron heads Ford 302 or 289.

The Agena was red in its first incarnation.

I am interested in writing a story about a car that was
really trashed when first found and rought to pristine condition.
I thought one of these was Norbert MacNamara's ATS but wasn't
    his a wine red color?

Also interesting is that William L. Mitchell, the flamboyant GM designer
once bought an ATS for his minions in Styling to be inspired by. I don't know if he
switched it to American engine or not or whether it is one of these cars pictured.

Mitchell, as discussed elsewhere in this forum on design, regularly bought
souvenir cars at the European auto shows and brought them back to Warren, MI
    to inspire the troops
