10 years ago I bought my first sports car, a Maserati 3200. I bought it with 7 000 km and the interesting fact is that it had been driven by Michal Schumacher for several months before I bought the car (I still have a letter from Ferrari Switzerland conforming that the car was lent to Michael Schumacher before I bought it).

I drove this maser for 4 years and sold it back to the dealer with 70 000 km to “upgrade” to a Maser Coupe GT. Where I really loved my 3200 I never really got into my Coupe GT. So after another 4 years I sold my Coupe GT and bought a 575M which I am still very happy with.

Yesterday I saw a friend who wants to buy a Quattroporte and he asked me if you would support him. Of course I did and so we went to my dealer today to test drive a Quattroporte. Guess what is still there? My old 3200. While my friend was talking to the sales guy I had a drive in my old 3200. I did not sit in this car for 6 years and the dealer could not sell it until now!

Wow, what a feeling. The acceleration of the 3200 is still astonishing and does not feel slower than my 575M. I still love the turbos when they kick in! It feels much faster than a 456 although it takes about the same time for 0-100 (0-60). It is a bit old fashioned but it is still a great (looking) car!

So guess what I did? I asked the dealer if I can have my old car over the weekend. He offered me to buy my old car for a significant lower price than I sold it to the dealer 6 years before. If I buy back my car they will perform a belt service, detail the whole car, add new tires and give me warranty for 12 months for the engine and the gearbox. They assured that they had driven the car regularly during these 6 years and I feel quite comfortable with the 12 months warranty. Also my impression on the first test drive was very positive.

So I think this is a really good deal and I still love this car. I also can afford the money but do not really need another car.

What do you guys think about it? Would you do it?

    Thanks for any comments.

    Markus

PS: I hope it is not too strange to post pics of a Maser in the 575 section...

Very pretty. I have a real soft-spot for the 3200, despite the "what if" thoughts, i'd really like one, particularly the manual, only downside is the crank/block destruction=big bill worry....

Oh, and in pic. Number 8, the vac pipe above the left hand airbox should have the modified (orange) one way valve fitted!

Do it! If you buy it but end up changing your mind you can always sell it. If you dont buy it but someone else does and you regret missing it you could be kicking yourself for years. I know which of those outcomes I'd choose!!

Thanks to all! I think that is exactly what I wanted to hear... :)

Could you elaborat on this valve? So I can ask my tech. Thank you.

The family also reacted quite positive so I think I will pull the trigger. Let me sleep another night and on Monday I will call the dealer. I will keep you posted.

    Thanks to all

Not quite the same but I have a 550 and a 4200. I love them both but for different reasons. To me the 550 is elegant, classy, refined and sophisticated while the 4200 is more overtly spirited, mysterious (seems not many people are familiar with the earlier masers) and exciting. But I am with everyone else, go for it!

Sure. You see the pipe above the left airbox? There is a white valve there. There was a modified one that is visable by being partially orange. It's no big deal really, posted it more in fun, but have them check if you buy it. It's a stunning looking car.

I was at the dealer this evening and signed the contract for the Maserati!

Now they will prepare the car (belt service, detailing etc.). The car should be ready in about two weeks. Great!

Find below a pic of my stable mates.

Congratulations. A superb brace of cars. I think the 3200 will compliment your other fine car. Enjoy in good health!

I have a 456 and a Gransport. Love them both, and despite being very similar (four seater GT, front engine) they have a very different feeling. The Maseratis are great cars and to have both is a wonderful thing!

Colby – I had a 4200 which I never loved. I should have taken a Gransport. This is a much better car (gearbox, suspension, etc.) than the “standard” 4200. The 3200 which I bought now (again) is a much more special car. It has the old Maserati turbo engine which is rather difficult to come out of corners without spinning wheels and which is a more old-fashioned car compared to a Gransport, but I really love this car.

First, my wife thought that you cannot have two similar cars like a Ferrari and a Maserati but now she understands that these are really different cars complementing each other.

Congratulation! I had a 3200 for two years. It is a very "emotional" car. It looks expencive to people who are not very familiar with luxury cars (just like an Aston M, Jag etc, but to people who know exactly what a 3200 really is, it is very special! I had seven older biturbo Maseratis before the 3200. The 3200 has the joy of the older ones, but in a new shell. Looks fantastic even today :)

Congratulations on picking up your car again. I've always had an affinity for the 3200, it's a shame we didn't get them in the US, I love those taillights.

I miss my 4200 CC (traded for my 575). I'd buy it again too.

Thanks for all the kind comments!

It is interesting how many of us had – or still have – a Maserati and still love it. Although my 575 is a much better car in many respects the Maserati is still a beautiful car which complements the Ferrari really well.

I did not hear from the dealer when the car will be ready but hope to pick it up by end of this week.

Markus...good luck with the new addition. We have a 2005 575 and a 2010 Maser GTS...their cousins that compliment each other very well.

I took delivery of my old love last Friday!

Look what a beauty! The dealer detailed the car perfectly. Although the car is 12 years old now it looks like new. In the pic below the finish acts like a mirror. I am really pleased.

The car still drives fine and I took her to work today. What a pleasure.

I plan to do some shots of the Maserati together with the 575M and will post them here (still a bit strange to post pics of a Maserati in the Ferrari section…).

Thanks for all the comments and advises!

The car looks great! Is it a non metallic blue? Looks like Ferrari pozzi blue.. What is the name of that shade of blue in "Maserati language"? I am thinking about getting a 3200 as a daily driver myself. They are just too cool to be sitting in the garage.
