Hi all, I have recently begun to occasionally hear this strange loud squealing noise from the right rear of the car that sounds similar to slowly letting the air out of a balloon. It happens maybe every third or fourth time I drive the car, certainly not all the time. It's definitely related to wheel speed, as the pitch rises and lowers with speed, not engine revs. It does it in neutral or in gear. If I yank the steering wheel to the left, it goes away instantly and doesn't come back, and only does it occasionally which is a pain because I can't replicate it for my mechanic. Any ideas are appreciated, and before Shamile chimes in, it is not the same type of squeal that happens in the passenger seat of his cars Best!
Sounds like you have a dose of the Shamile squeel You can get rid of it by moving further North to cooler weather P
I recently had a squeel on my BMW 850 that turned out to be the ABS system pump. When I slowed enough, the sound went away but returned as soon as the car was fast enough for the system to start running. It was a strange sound that had me replace carrier bearings to try to fix it. So now I have new carrier bearings. Since you mention yanking the wheel to stop the sound, maybe a pump might be somewhere in the loop for you to check.
Dude, I live in Calgary, Canada. If I move much further North, I will be in Russia upside down! Haha! Cheers
Dear Ferraristi, Bawhahahaha! ....damn those hand prints on the front hood of my cars.... Hey....that sounds like a good line.... Can you see Russia from your house too? This really sounds like a right rear wheel bearing. Are you sure it's coming from the right rear? Usually rear wheel bearings sound like they're coming through the car....like a drone. To try a simple test, jack up the car. You don't need to lift the whole car on jack stands but just one wheel off the ground at a time. Once you jack up the wheel you want to test, grab the tire at the 12 and 6 o clock positions. Pull / push in and out. Meaning, if you push in at 12...pull forward at 6. If you have any play....more likely, it's a wheel bearing. The rear bearings are a pain and the hub has to come off. I had my RR rear wheel bearing done....it wasn't cheap. I didn't know how to do it....then came our Auzzie friend Robert who did a whole thread on it. Shamile Freeze....Miami Vice !
I agree...sounds like wheel bearing..when you turn the wheel it unloads the bearing briefly so the sound stops fo r short time. It will get worse and louder over time. Report back after repaired.
Thanks Shamile, I will give that a whirl this week and let you know what I come up with. Cheers. PS - and about the handprints, I'd hate to see what you spend on Quick Detailer spray in a year...
Another way to check a wheel bearing is: Get wheels off of the ground, grab the spring with one hand while rotating the tire with the other hand. You will be able to feel the roughness in the bearing thru the spring. If I get one that passes the Shamile wiggle test and my spring test, I run the car (with wheels off the ground) at whatever speed it is you hear the noise and use a mechanics stethascope to find the source of the noise. Good Luck
Sorry for the *slight* delay in reporting the fix to this, but it turned out to be a spun rear wheel bearing. Replaced the bearings and added a little loctite for good meassure. No damage to the shaft or anything else. No issues now after putting another 15,000kms on it.
My tech has just confirmed my suspicion of a worn right rear bearing-another job for the winter lay-up
Hi Tim, My dealer (Ferrari of Alberta) did the whole repair and sourced the parts. Not sure what brand they used, but I assume it is whatever is OEM these days. Cheers.
Hi Clive, That's pretty much how I see it, too: driving season, and fixing season About the bearings on my car, the issue was that the outer ring was spinning in the hub causing the squealing noise. Luckily it didn't really do much damage and when they replaced it with the new one, they used a bead of Loctite in the hub to make sure it stayed put. Their suspicion was that the bearing seized which caused it to spin. Hopefully yours will be a nice easy job! Cheers.
Hi I HOPE THIS INFO WILL HELP HELP EVERYONE SAVE MONEY I HAVE JUST CHANGED REAR WHEEL BEARING ON MY 512TR VERY EXPENSIVE FROM FERRARI I FOUND OUT THAT THE MASERARI 3500 REAR BEARING IS THE SAME BEARING HALF THE PRICE OF FERRARI REGARDS MIKE
HI HOPE THIS INFO MIGHT HELP SAVE MONEY FOR SOMEONE I HAVE REPLACED REAR WHEEL BEARING ON MY 512TR VERY EXPENSIVE FROM FERRARI I REPLACED IT WITH A BEARING FROM A MASERATI 4200 HALF THE PRICE (SAME BEARING) REGARDS MIKE
Thanks mike I will pass this info on to my tech-hopefully the maser will fit the testarossa as well as the 512tr ! Clive-tr boy
512TR and TR rear bearings are considerably different. Mel has a thread on his 512TR bearing replacement and I recall he said it was also very $$. The Maserati bearing substitute is great news though for 512TR owners. I'm starting to research TR bearings and they seem to vary in price by manufacturer and range from ~$30-$150 US, with SKF and Timken being the more expensive. Robert Hayden (UZZ32Soarer) covers the replacement very well in his thread and/or website. Good luck!
Neil, Tim, Mike- thnx for the info guys Just back from a 90 mins drive in the last of the evening sun with a couple of members of my car club, one in his fly yellow F355 spider and a silver NSX -LIFE IS GOOD !!! ( I will try to post some pics-but I'm on my iPad?? )
