Hello everybody! I think the title pretty much says it all... I'm wondering if reving the car's engine in neutral might be harmful ? Thank already you all for the answer !
Only if the engine is cold. Warm things up and some spirited revs for onlookers is fine. Avoid overdoing it though unless your testaclones dominate your brain so much you can't say no.
The 458 (and California) use direct injection technology. What you don't want to do is start the car, rev it a few times, stop and shut it off. It will foul the plugs and the check engine light will come on. There's no way to correct it without removing the plugs. So, if someone says to you "start it up! I want to hear it rev!" -- don't. It will be an expensive demonstration.
You should not rev an unloaded engine to rev limits unless you want to purchase another engine. Peak rev limits are designed and set for engines under load. Pete
I can't stand it when somebody just revs the engine! Very Childish in my opinion! I remember when I purchased my first car and took it out to show my buddy! He jumped in and started reving it up and threw a rod! Of course he didn't offer to help with the bill to fix it! I also walked in on a mechanic once that was fixing my car and he was reving the heck out of it! I threatened to kill him and had to be restrained- I guess it was bad memories from my first car! Also hate to put up Ferraris on you tube and somebody is just sitting there reving the hell out of the engine! Their is one where the dealer revs the engine so long that he gets it to shoot fire out of the exhaust! I would never buy that car!
I totally agree that you should not rev the engine for all the reasons stated above and more. I know our engines are not Formula 1 but how do you account for this video? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh67yhZh21U[/ame]
I agree. If the engine is cold let it iddle for 5min at least. You can give it small revs(up to 4k) once in a while to help it get to the normal temperature. (green engine on your LCD). Then you can give some revs but don't floor it like a maniac. You should not stay over 8k for more than half a second otherwise it will overheat quickly and possible damage the engine. Some revs is not harmful. Just don't do it longer than lets say 1-2min because the engine and the exaust will get hot since you are not in movement to get more air to cool it down.
I can't tell you how many people in Vegas yell at me as I drive by: "Rev it!'. Then they go back to drinking their 2 foot tall Margarita. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I marvel at how many people actually buy and walk around with those "glasses". My Ferrari is usually in San Diego and I keep my (dark tinted) windows rolled up and seldom interact with anyone. The most often people comment is when I am at a gas station or getting in or out of my car when parking. Best
I'd rather listen to these than a lotus. Its hair raising [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgaPm0ivthc[/ame]
If i ever come down to SD I am going to look for you car and then drive by and ask you to rev it! lol FYI I drive a prius...you wont even hear me coming! haha
How not to rev it such a tool... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJYXntnzz5M]Ferrari F430 Spider FAIL Start + LOUD Sounds [/ame]
which just goes to show the sidewalk folks are no different then the rest of us... - how many threads on exhaust mods - how many claims of "who needs a radio"! - underpasses and tunnels!!! Ferrari virtue hierarchy: 1. looks 2. sound 3. all that driving stuff!
Did I miss something. Seen much much worse. If engine was already warm I see no real issues here - doesn't sound anywhere near max revs! If the engine was cold
It was cold. The uploader said it was parked for hours. The revs were pretty high. And you can see smoke coming from the engine bay.
How do you have a ferrari and not rev the engine... everyone wants to hear it... its a ferrari for god sake!!! I went to a restaurant yesterday and when I left me and my friend looked over and everyone came outside of the restaurant to see me take off... you better believe I revved it nothing crazy 4.5 to 5k rpms you don't have to go higher than that to get the effect
You are miss-understanding the OP's question. There is a difference in revving gently to 4.5 or 5k and banging the poor thing, while in neutral, on the rev limiter or thereabouts. I learnt this the hard way once as I had trouble starting a car when I was ~17 and then while still angry I revved the snot out of it in first gear ... not long later it ran the crank bearings. A very immature thing for me to do. Pete
My X5M (6500 RPM redline) has an electronic 4500 rev limiter operating in neutral even when the engine is hot. There must be a reason for it??
