The BMW E9 coupe community is small, but pretty organized. There are 3 or 4 fairly reconized reputable dealers and specialty shops. There are some similarities to the Ferrari community with certain well known personalities, and many people are multiple owners. I got the little green car from a E9 specialist dealer in New York, Hunting Ridge Motors.

I may be wrong, but I think many coupes are very undervalued now. There is somewhat of a price pecking order, CSL>>CSi>CS, with the CSLs being over $100K in some instances.

I wasn't a big BMW fan until I drove one. Current DD is a 2000 e38 sport - my 2nd e38. I've not found a better car that can haul 4 adults comfortably (or 2 adults, 2 kids and a dog in my case) across multiple states and still be satisfying to drive. I had seriously contemplated an e39 m5, but the higher cost to get one, higher maintenance, worse fuel mileage and less room all conspired against it being a good DD choice. I have two friends with e46 m3's as DD's and they both love them. I would likely have a dakkar yellow e36 m3 if I didn't need more room as that is one of my favorites. Or maybe a 635csi...

Found this in the BMW Zentrum today. It was sitting right next to a beautiful 2002.

I was going through my issue of the Dec 2011 R&T and it got me too thinking if anyone here has ever owned or seen the original M5 based on the E12 chassis?

From R&T: "Several low-production versions of the E12 were built. In 1978, the Motorsport 533i was produced for a short time in the German market featuring a 3.2L engine. The M535i, featuring a 3.5L engine with special styling such as Motorsport front and rear spoilers, Recaro-brand sport seats, a close-ratio transmission and limited-slip differential, larger brakes, and other styling cues such as Motorsport striping down the sides of the car and on the front airdam, was available between 1979 and 1981 with 1410 cars produced. In South Africa, the 530 MLE was produced as a light-weight homologation special for racing. These Motorsport E12's are often considered the first production models that the BMW Motorsport division ever produced."

That is one RARE BIRD considering that only 2241 E28 M5's were sold wordwide.

Was driving head to head in my 430 spider against a new F10 M5 this past Saturday. Wow. That car is fast! F430 fast, not 458 fast. But for a 5-seater luxury car, it's RIDICULOUS.

My first car was '68 2002 #1660711 (I think), one of the first in country in the spring of 1968. Sweet car. Top end was 108 mph, unfortunately verified by the Nassau County Police on the LIE at three in the morning. I used the 2002 as part trade for a new '73 Bavaria. The Bavaria was my last BMW, as I sold it after two years to generate some funds to buy a '73 Ferrari Dino Spyder. Photo below was taken in the spring of 1969 after I won a two-day 500 mile rally in the 2002. I still have that windbreaker--but not the hair.

Before the CSi, we had a new 318ti while stationed at Ramstein. That little car was perfect for a small family in Europe. Small enough for Euro towns, very practical, good gas mileage, and would cruise all day no kiddin at 110 mph comfortably on the A-bahn. Should have never sold it.

Yeah, the darker colors suit it better imo. I think that color is Azurite Black, which similar to Carbon Black on the E39 M5, it's actually a very dark blue. Looks black while in shadows and dark blue in the light.

The car was actually Space Gray. It looks much darker in the photo from the lighting. I like that Azurite!!

Okay Bimmer guys, I am going to look at a 1997 328is coupe at lunchtime. 225k mi. The price is right for a car of that mileage.

What gotchas should I be looking for besides cooling issues?

M52b28 is a pretty solid motor. Just keep the cooling system in check and it will run forever.
