Ban Romain and we don't need 3 cars, etc. I'm surprised he wasn't fined whatsoever. Giving him a 10 sec penalty did not justification.

Get rid of the SC then. :)

Seriously, the SC is way overused. Particularly in the rain. Rolling start is about the worst idea F1 had in decades.

I agree with the idea of having a backup car.

Particularly if it means doing away with all the foolish qualifying rules.

I like the safety car. I like the way it 're-sets' the race and gives you a chance to watch a dozen replays of the crash knowing you're not missing any action! I agree about rolling starts though. Let them just drive. If there's a crash then bring out the safety car.

There are very few instances over the last couple of years where a T-car could have been used so it seems a bit pointless to allow them again.

    Not a new concern.
An easy step would be to return the runoff areas to deep gravel traps. As it stands a driver can take foolish risks knowing that he'll be able to return to the race.
Deeper traps would also stop cars before they hit the walls, saving the time and expense of repairs of an off track excursion during practice and qualifying.

What "foolish qualifying rules", exactly? If you mean the "top 10 start on quali tires" rule, then I agree - Give 'em another set of options for Q3 (so they all run) and we'd be good IMO.

+1 Seem to remember similar articles *way* back in the day too.....

    +1, but;

Unfortunately, that's debatable. Much testing and experience has demonstrated that they actually (generally) stop quicker on tarmac and skid across gravel.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I was referring to the start on qualies bit.

This weekend I was struck (sic) by how little the cars deaccelerated when traveling sideways. Straight line braking is better on Tarmac but sideways, I expect, is enhanced by gravel. If not the case quicksand should do the trick. ;)
In any case there should be positional consequences for off track adventures.

+1 Fair enough. No argument from me on that one.

Nope - I'm pretty sure that, generally, even sideways they stop quicker on tarmac. IIRC, the problem with gravel is if it's soft enough to slow 'em down there's a danger they get flipped.

Big ol' +1 to that! Trouble is, how to achieve it?

I can't see it happening, but a grass (or similar) "strip" at the track edge backed by tarmac - Get it on that mess, chances are you're gonna spin - Probably off, and thence onto the tarmac which saves your arse. But at least it would stop 'em making up their own race track......

    Cheers,
    Ian

^^^ Driver safety yes but taking a driver completely out of the race, no.

its easy, bring back the t-cars, let drivers run an extra 30 minutes in 2nd or 3rd practice to set them up to preferences. In the event of first lap stupidity, that driver(s) gets black flagged, rest line up again using t-car if necessary, and we get a decent race without the Grosjeans of this world changing the outcome of championships.

Result - better racing, more racing for fans to watch, an extra reason to be at the track on practice sessions. bring in an extra set of tyres for 3rd qualy and we are set. Crap starters like G will miss so many Gps he will have to realise very quickly how to conduct himself or he will end up back in GP2 or go-carts with someone with a brain taking his seat - simples

No need for that but there should be some disadvantage for foolish moves.

They already have this rule. It's the "Don't drive like an ass, or we will black flag you" rule. It, like the meatball flag, is rarely used anymore in F1.

...Or put the third driver that is generally standing around in them. Fans have more cars on track during free practice and young drivers get more track time. The problem with the Tcar issue is the current engine and gearbox rule requiring the use of specific componants. These could not be switched to a Tcar in time to comply with regs and TV schedules.

Nor should they be. Prepare the Tcar in a normal fashion that will allow either driver to atleast finish the race and possibly gain WDC or WCC points.

    Indeed.

It does however tend to be terminal...... Which may be good or bad depending on your viewpoint of course.

I know, but when it was a Schumacher, Hakkinen, Hill, Coulthard, or some other major driver in the shunt, that red flag came out pretty fast.

I agree to a certain extent only because there are simply racing incidents and then there is sheer stupidity. Sheer stupidity is usually very apparent but sometimes a simple racing incident is deemed stupid when in reality it may not have been.

    Tough cal for me.

I think that the reason for so many crashes particularly on the first corner is that we have cars that are greatly more safer than previous years and a new generation of video game young drivers.
There is no game restart button in F1.
True, cars flying in the air over the cockpits of each other, re; Fred at Spa is very dangerous.
But we don't need the bumper cars look of the Indy cars.
I have been watching (on TV) since the seventies and crashes like we are having were very rare.
The Pirelli tyres over any other brand have introduced a new dimension, not a good one imho.
There aren't many excuses for running into other cars especially on the first lap other than this it can't happen to me mentality.
I just have seen to much great racing in the past and todays hi-tech rockets seem to dictate how the drivers drive, more than the driver himself.
The telemetry in the pits allows the team to dictate to the driver as well as inform him, so again a lot of the past raw skill of the drivers is eliminated.
Also the feeder series like GP3 GP2, seem to graduate drivers much too quickly.
What do I know I'm just an old guy.
Some of the best racing in single seaters that I ever saw were British F3 in the era of Mike Thackwell and Martin Brundle, pass after pass, like a DTM for single seaters!
Also how long will Bernie live, until he is 95 years old??
I though the Balestre era was absurd, now all bets are off.
The Speed TV debacle/Fox also dumbs down the presentation of the world's fastest circuit racing....

I can tolerate all the other laughable sh!et (imho only) that gets thrown back and forth around here, but this one here warrants a ban or at least a forum timeout.
