Had a 456/M owner recently ask me about redoing the valve guides on his car, so thought I would post some info on a little research and gleaning from other threads I have done. According to the pros, Ferrari valve train parts are not of the highest quality and extremely expensive. Better quality and lower priced parts manufactured in the US are easily available that can substantially lower the cost of valve train component repairs. For specifics, I would contact the two manufacturers below. When you start pricing 48 of anything, the price can get kind of high, so saving a few bucks and getting better parts is definitely a good deal. At least I cannot think of anybody who wants to replace valve guides twice.

So here is what I have so far. The first machine shop, Lesco, is the one used by Brian Crall and they have an extremely good reputation. The second, S&R Exotics, is the shop of FChatter Gary Sharpe (enginefxr), who also does service on Ferraris in addition to machine work. For valves, Manley has been a great name since my hotrod days in the 60s and early 70s. For valve guides and seats, CHE Precision also has a great reputation.

If anybody has other suggestions, please post them and we will add them to the list.

In many cases, it is probably cheaper to ship your heads to a good machine shop for a $70/hr job rather than have it done by a $150/hr Ferrari mechanic. Your choice.

Brian- Jump in if I have anything screwed up on the subject.

PPPCENTER has been manufacturing a lot of valve guides for Ferrari restorations as well as retainers, valve keepers, valve seats, piston pins, bushings and custom flat tappets. Their quality, Ra finishes and superior alloys used are the best.

Hello DJ and thank you for this information. I see that you've referred to PPPCenter in the 3rd person (ie "Their" quality, etc.)

I also see that someone named D. Jackson is the CEO and an L. Jackson is the President of this company.

As your last name is Jackson, would you happen to have an interest in this company, financial or otherwise?

I had my valves ground from Manley blanks. Craig Nelson (Monza 456) owner of The Jag Shop and former Ferrari tech who does all my work, sent the machine shop work out and then did the remainder of the job. My engine is now tight and very strong.

Yes, I do have a vested interest in PPPCENTER. Our company has mainly catered to NASCAR, but has likely attracted Ferrari owners and restoration shops due to internet exposure. We only use Ampco-45 and Moldstar22/ 90 bronze alloys for bushingsq and valve guides. Google Moldstar -- it is an amazing proprietary alloy (superior to BeCu) that is non-caustic. Moldstar has added lubricty which extends the life of mating parts as well. Moldstar is the ultimate material of choice for valve seats, guides, rod bushings and lifter sleeves. Moldstar or Ampco-45 alloy guides typically outlive other valvetrain components in their environment.

Thank you for allowing me to join.

    Hi Maranello,

I happened upon this thread on a Google Search to see where Ferrari valvetrain replacement parts could be purchased. I was curious mainly because we currently have a lot of Ferrari work. I'm not sure if our customers would appreciate me listing their names here in this thread, but I could verify their existence and our credibility. Feel free to call me anytime.

    Kind Regards,

    D.J.

i have been looking into purchasing a 456 or 456M for 4 months now and i think i have exhausted all options currently available in the UK o_O My biggest struggle was to find on in good condition and FSH, rightly priced. Finally i decided to go for a 1995 manual with FSH and nice color combination and i am not trying to organise a PPI. How easy is it to check the valve guides ? i am wondering if current owner will let the specialist i will appoint to do the PPI do this. I am guessing will need to access all 12 cylinders ?

Also, i was thinking for assigning the PPI to an official Ferreri garage in the area, but someone has told me i may get better result from a specialist who works regularly on such cars. What do you think ?

Nick- A compression check and bleed-down check should give you the information you need. Not all sets of valve guides were bad, just bad luck to get one. I will leave it up to the UK owners to provide a recommendation on who should do the tests. Just be advised if it is an official Ferrari agent, they will probably only want to use Ferrari parts if you decide to let them do the work. Nothing wrong with that, since you will get sintered steel valve guides like the 575M/612, but it will be expensive.
