After the 22nd July 2011 massacre in Oslo/Utøya, many online newspapers installed Facebook-plugins which displayed the same name as what you have on Facebook (in most cases, your full, real name). Same thing happened: It went back to normal rudeness/insult level within weeks.

Cursing is part of our Roman influence, the people of Latium sure knew how to live life!

In Latin America just like in Anglo North America there are just too many puritans, but cursing is used in just the same manner, at those proper moments. But I just like how Cuba remained closer to Spain.

My philosophy with online chat has always been to try to visualise the person on the other end of the computer. So I essentially approach conversations on here as I would do with a normal face-to-face conversation... though my writing style is somewhat more like a letter format with my more formal well-wishing sign-off. I find that if you always try to consider the person you're typing to, it's much easier to avoid being impolite. :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Way back, pre-web, in the days of Compuserve and Prodigy I read something that advised people to conduct conversations online as if speaking to a clergyman that they had never met before.

I think between these three posts you guys have pretty much nailed it. I have long been an advocate of communication preferences in order as follows: Face-to-face, telephone, email or text or other written means as a last resort. And if I choose to email or text someone about something important I like to follow up with a phone call. Or just the opposite, talk on the phone then follow up with an email summarizing our conversation.

There is a reason legal documents and contracts are so stinking long. They have to be certain that everyone understands the exact same things and are not open wide to interpretation.

Of course most of this is in the professional world, not personal. I have some friends who just about exlusively communicate through text and others who won't answer if you text them 100 times in a row!

The written word is not very good at conveying emotions and is often times interpreted wrong by the other party!

Right- anonymity. Same reason many drivers behave the way they do on the road. Mostly arbitrary license plates, hidden behind window tint, rude/arrogant/selfish/even dengerous driving on every day road environment.

How would these people drive if their car had their name/ID/address on the rear bumper(?).

    Thats what I mean.

    you don't know **** either!

are you offended by the word ****? would crap be OK instead? what I said was a fact for that topic because he wouldn't have made his post if he knew what I knew and most others. Sure nicer would have been "with your stated opinion it is obvious you don't know about the topic you are discussing". now are you so butt hurt about being called out for being a rude user you are going to troll me forever? If so we might as well put you out of your misery right now so you are no longer burdened trailing me around with nothing better to do. pathetic.

I see that its only about 250 miles or so from south lake to Houston.
I've been to both of those cities several times and you can't imagine how much they have in common.
Most of the people I met in south lake seemed pretty much cordial, the same goes for the people in Houston.
Some of the strong points about Texans are their love of state, country family and barbeque
Yummy barbeque, I will get back to that in a second.
Have you ever driven in Texas ? Well I have, hundreds of times on it seems just about every interstate and 2 lane hardtop they got and one thing you see everywhere are stars, it seems Texans put stars on darn near everything, hell they even got a beer named after a star, for example, you ever heard of buckeye beer ? or silver state beer ? or land of enchantment beer ?, no, no, and no.
Then you got the country thing, rodeos, cowboys and cow girls, line dancing, saloons, the 72 ounce steak, they probally sell more styles of boots in Texas than anywhere else in the world.
Next you got family, now these Texans don't just have reunions , they have shindigs, I think they may have actually invented that word. We are talking hoop and holler in, boot stompin mud muck in rooty too tie fresh and fruity (humor) family gatherings.
Then you got the Texas barbeque, not to say nothing bad about Tennessee barbeque, which in its own right is awfully good, but Texans will barbeque just about anything the flys, walks, crawls or slithers and I have never ever figured out how they make it so mouth watering good and I probally never will.
With so much in common among fellow Texans you would think that if they met halfway, what a good ole time these two boys would have.

Oh, umm well I can't always stay up to date on everything.
I mean, there is just so much going on, I'm lucky that I'm only 3 weeks behind.
I remember when I was 6 months behind once.
So, how about that Texas barbeque ?

I confess I nuked someone last night who said "**** you Republicans take your piece of **** candidate and go home losers!"

I was pretty offended by that. He wrote me asking why I unfriended him. I told him I was offended and couldn't understand why anyone would post something like that, and that if he can't win in a classy manner, then I had no room for people like that in my life. He apologized, removed the post (on his own), and I sent him some free music. In retrospect it was a poor choice of me to unfriend him. Won't happen again. Gotta love election time LOL.

I just hide the political posts, or unsubscribe for a while if they are frequent. There is little end result 12 years down the road difference between either of the two major parties, so I don't see why people get soo worked up about it.

As for people being rude online, I mostly notice it from areas of the world where parents are not as involved in raising their kids. Places with stronger family ties, have very polite online cultures. The USA has had more and more kids in day care over the decades, and I think its showing.

I will defriend someone if they post rudely on my personal wall. I dont take that crap as its a personal attack in my opinion.

But if they post something on their own wall then Im fine with it

I just defriended someone ive known for 20 years because every time I make a Conservative post on my own wall he feels it necessary to pop on and post something snarky like , 'I dont see you being smart enough to become President' or similar.

I warned him that if he has nothing intelligent to present then dont say anything...he did it again alst night so....bye bye
