Hi everyone. I have a 1991 ferrari 348 TS im having some wired issue. When I go to start her in the mornings (yes shes alomost my daily) on the first crank she will start for a second rpm start to drop and she dies (pushing the gas or not). I go to start her again crank her try giving her a little gas she starts and then again rpm can hold for like 4 seconds longer then the first time and she dies. On the third crank she will stay on, of course i need to give her a little gas and the rpm's drop like the first 2 cranks but by the third start she just fine. I can drive her all day and we are good. But let her sit for like 6+ hours and history repeats itself. SO HERES THE CATCH, a buddy of mine with a 348 told me to shut off power from battery after i drive her and the car is nice and warm. Then wait about 10min, turn the power back on, start the car and let it idle for 10min as the computer relearns itself. So I did. When I go to start my car the first time after reconnecting my battery power it does exactly the same thing it would do it the mornings keep in mind this does not ever happen while the car is warm. So could I have solved something or is this a clue of whats happening. Not sure if its a relay issue or something with a fuel mixture. Another wird thing is my Rpm seem to shoot up to 2k or 1900 alot. If I tap the gas the drop down my mechanic said if I clean the butterflys it will go away because they are sticking but I think maybe hes wrong and this is related to the other issue plus if the butterflys were sticking then why would it shoot from normal idle to like 2k with out me pushing anything and it only those it after the car is fully warmed up befor that the rpm are at about 1200 to 1k . Once you start driving the keep moving 1200 then 1k then shoot up to 2k tap the gas and back to 1100 when I say shoots up I dont mean My idle jumps back and forth i mean I go in nuteral and my rpms will be at 2k untill i tap the gas... PLEase Help Guys sorry for all the explaining just want to make it clear....

You didn't mention - when your buddy described the "re-initializing" process to you, did he mention that you should NOT press the gas pedal at all when you start the engine after reconnecting the battery?

There's a whole bunch of other possibilities that may be causing your issues, but this is a good place to start. You might want to make sure that your intake boots are attached squarely and securely (no loose clamps). Some people are very high on checking the resistance at the MAF sensors. Your throttles could be out of synch if someone messed with them to adjust the idle speed.

Are you running stock exhausts, with the OXY sensors, or do you have an aftermarket exhaust with test pipes? Sometimes an issue like this can be caused by OXY sensors that are not grounded properly.

Good luck with it, and congratulations on your 348!

My car on occasion has the same problem, I noticed it on occasion shortly after I would wash the car/engine off. It did it again recently, I remove the connectors from the MAF sensors and the thottle position sensors and spray them with contact cleaner and blow them off with compressed air, seems to fix the problem every time for me. This is why the Dave Helms gold connector kit would be a good addition, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

It could also be the idle control valve as noted in the thread hyperlink. If mine does it again I may clean those as well. Good luck.
