I'm taking my kid to tour U of A on Monday, but we fly in Sunday afternoon. I'm not a fan of chain restaurants and would like some local flavor. Any suggestions for a great place to eat? Keep in mind I'll have my 17 year old with me, so we probably don't need fine French cuisine.

I'm going to direct you to the best little sandwich shop you've ever had:

    http://www.mommagoldbergsdeli.com/tuscaloosa/

It's an Auburn tradition (War Eagle!) however they have franchised to 'Bama. Order the Momma's Love and Nachos, and thank me later!

+ a bazillion. Go to the shack on the edge of town though. The one downtown is fine but doesn't have near the mojo.

    Also: City Cafe in Northport.

Downtown - DePalmas - Italian or Chucks Fish - Fish and steak.

The original Dreamland is a little out of the way. There is another Dreamland location just over the bridge from downtown going into Northport.

Cypress Inn - North of the river.

If you are a wings fan - Baumhower Wings North of the River or Wings U in Mid Town Village mall.

If you want to go the BBQ route and want something else instead of Dreamland try Jim and Nix just across from the new Federal Bldg or Moe's BBQ next to the Fed Cournhouse. Remember its pork PPQ over here in the Southeast.

Its gotten to be a nice campus - lots of new and pretty buildings next to the older red brick ones.
Lots of kids from Dallas and Hou at U fo A due to the empahsis the University has been putting on increaseing out of state recruits for good students.

Good Luck - if I can let let me know.

I'm getting lots of suggestions for Dreamland. And I do love good BBQ. I'm only finding a location on 15th is that the right one?

    Thanks all!

He's getting the full court press from them. He's been accepted to honors college, offered full tuition and another scholarship from the Engineering school. It's going to be hard to say no to. The good news is, he's very interested.

DreamLand is fabulous. Either location that suits your convenience will be fine for your visit. Drew's suggestions are spot on; he's no visitor, he lives there.

My wife and I were there yesterday for homecoming; our son attends. He has enjoyed it tremendously (honors college scholarship) and has made some terrific friends. (If your son has any interest in Greek life, am happy to assist.)

His education, teachers, counselors have been superb. The business and accounting programs are first rate. U of A is a very competitive school, not just in football, and current leadership is putting it more on the map than ever.

Campus is beautiful (and the girls have always been!), the town and surrounding area also a nice complement. Hope you enjoy your visit!

    PM me if you like.

    Hi Jim,

Here is the link to Dreamland original location. It is a bit out of the way but has a lot of ambiance! http://www.dreamlandbbq.com/Tuscaloosa.aspx

Their other location is newer and located just over the bridge that connects downtown Tuscaloosa to Northport. Going north over the Black Warrior River on Lurleen Wallace Bbridge take first exit turn right you cannot miss it. The original is probably the one you shold hit if you have time.

Adams, next time you get to Tuscaloosa for a game or something look me up. Love to have you over or meet up.

    Regards,

    Drew
