You well may be right always on the podium and in interviews Sebastian is quite reverential if that is the word of Fernando, I take it as an admiration of his ability and he would be a good fit.
If Fernando wants a team mate that quick, but that's what the old man would have done in a heartbeat if he was still with us...

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh says signing Sergio Perez is a risk
By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Thursday, November 8th 2012, 12:03 GMT

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has admitted that there is an "element of risk" to signing Sergio Perez as Lewis Hamilton's replacement for 2013.

Hamilton decided to end his relationship with the Woking-based team, for which he has spent his entire Formula 1 career, to join rival team Mercedes from next year.

The 2008 world champion will be replaced by Mexican Perez, who made his grand prix debut with Sauber at the start of last season after finishing runner-up to Pastor Maldonado in the 2010 GP2 Series.

Perez has had a season full of up and downs this year, having finished on the podium three times but failing to score a point since he was announced as a future McLaren driver.

Whitmarsh concedes the Mexican, who will partner Jenson Button at McLaren, is still an unknown quantity for the team.

"He is a 22-year old. He is the same age now as when Lewis started. I think he has a lot of talent," said Whitmarsh.

"But I have to be honest and I don't know [about his potential]. We wouldn't have signed him unless we thought he could go to another level, but I think what I said is that we don't know.

"He has never experienced the type of pressure that these two guys [Hamilton and Jenson Button] are under. You turn up in a McLaren and if you are not on the front couple of rows then there is a lot of pressure applied to you.

"These two guys know it, they have experienced it, they live with it, and they thrive with it and do well.

"There are examples of drivers who can live with that pressure and other drivers who cannot, so I think it would be foolish of me to sit here and say, taking a very young driver, there is not an element of risk in it.

"But we would not have done it unless there was a possibility. Time will tell."

Perez has also been involved in several accidents in the last few races, including the Abu Dhabi GP, but Whitmarsh insisted that is not a concern for his team.

"I think a lot of people had incidents in that race and it was pretty incident-filled," he said.

    Perez brings Slim's cash.
You would be a fool not to take him over Hulk, DiResta, or any other upcoming promising driver who brings but a fraction.

    Kimi is too picky IMO.
He either wants a WDC ride or he doesnt.
There are but three such teams and he's quit two.

This makes LdM look all the more savvy for not having signed Perez. There is a just a faint touch of "well, we are stuck with this maybe it will work" in these comments from Mclaren. Also I have no doubt the Mexican money will be paying the Mercedes engine bill soon :)
Perez has talent. He probably needs another year at Sauber to smooth things out. Certainly he might get all that done this year and do wonders at Mclaren as well. Will be one of the big stories to watch next year. Along with LH at Mercedes!

The only reason Kimi has been consistently motivated is because he took a break from F1. I seriously predict next season he will be all over the place again.

Would never be a part of my team. You just don't know which Kimi is going to turn up.

It's ridiculous to make those statements when the guy is months away to drive for them. At least wait until he's driven for McLaren a few races :D. I think he'll surprise a few folks, but we all need to wait for next season to at least have some credibility based on actual results. LdM might look savvy or like a fool; we'll see :). Have a good one.

Can you imagine the uproar here, if he was signed for Ferrari. He has done very little of note since the Mclaren signing. I can only imagine the second guessing that one would see. I did caveat with 'looks' for LdM. This was not the first article alluding to some doubt even if slight at Mclaren over this signing.

I also did state he might actually do great at Mclaren as well( do wonders).

The proof will be in the pudding. At the halfway point or even after completeing the full season I am not expecting miracles from Perez yet I am wishing him luck.
