Hey all, I'm trying to decide which wheels to have on my new FF. I have the choice of either standard of the drop forged.......no additional cost, dealer will fit either. I really can't decide, but maye be DF wheels are a bit bling for a GT car. All comments/insights welcome. Cheers, John Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I dont like the second ones. What color will your FF be? I have seen the first choices with the center of the rim in a darker taint than the rest of the wheel. http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/03/ferrari-ff-geneva.jpg
It looks like your negotiating paid off? I prefer the non standard and think it will be an easier resale as they are optional and thus more expensive. Great buy, I am sure.
great looking car! I liked the optional wheels, until I saw the stock wheels painted. Its a "look", and not for everyone, but I like it. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Definitely go with DF wheels. If the standard wheels were painted I may go with that option but they are not. Either way it is great car. Enjoy it!
Congrats John -- you've been lamenting the loss of your 612, and now you've come back strong with the FF. Good call. IMHO the DF wheel looks a little more distinctive. The standard is a classic that helps smooth the edges of the racier Ferrari cars, but the DF suits and helps dress up the softer FF design elements.
Forged are stronger and should be lighter. But I prefer the look of the cast wheels. They are more refined with smoother curves. I really think this is such a personal choice that you really can't expect to get a definitive answer here.
Seeing what other people think is interesting but at the end of the day, it is your car to finish off as you like it. Having said that, regardless of looks, a forged wheel generally weighs less, which gives less unsprung weight and a better ride. It is often a noticeable difference. Something to keep in mind.
The standart wheels are something I pretty hate in the automotive industry. "Oriented wheels". It means the spokes do not point in the same direction, according to the side of the car. It means there is only one type of wheels, right and left. This is a serious design mistake. Same thing happens with 996 turbo wheels anbd the standart 458 wheels. The engineers at Mercedes did a good job with the SLR Turbine wheels. There is one "Left " set and one "Right" set. So the optionnal wheels look 100X better.
"Oriented wheels" are not an issue IMO, not a design mistake unless the spoke orienting effectively vents air in or out. When they're designed with that purpose, they always make sure to differentiate left and rigt sets. As for the best wheels for the FF, I like the 2-tone painted standard. The forged wheel I find it too ricey, reminds me of some ugly BMW wheels. Diamond version even worse. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
