My wife suggested that I take my son, who is turning 18, with a couple of his friends, 16 and 17, to LA for the weekend some time in December as a birthday present. Like many teenagers nowadays, they're "young" for their age and kind of nerdy. (personally, at that age, I would have liked for my dad to take me to Vegas, drop me off with a pocketful of cash and say " see you back in the hotel at noon tomorrow", but that's not the way my kid is).

Are the guys too old for Disneyland? Anything else you might suggest? All ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Looking to escape the endless gray drizzle for warmth and sunshine; give the guys a little adventure. They're computer/gamer nerd types, young for their ages. I thought Universal Studios maybe. Not car nuts and they prefer AC/DC to the current music scene. A friend suggested I take them to Tijuana; my wife and the other moms would kill me :D

^ That's a good call. If they like movies they can go tour a movie studio. I have contacts at 20th Century Fox so I can get them on the lot if they'd be interested in that.

Never too old for Disney but California Adventure, 6 Flags, Knotts and Universal studios and UniversalCity walk are good options. They might get a kick out of one the Hollywood tours on a double decker bus. Queen Mary tour in Long Beach and zip lining on Catalina are fun as well. :D

    In no particular order..

Take them to Venice and give them $50 each.. but they have to be back by 7PM.

Go to Coogie's (Malibu) for a weekend breakfast. If they like that, wander over to the country mart for coffee for an hour or so afterwards. Trust me, you'll be tripping over celebs at this point, and the kids will be talking about the women (they've only heard of) for years to come. Then head off for Knott's (Disneyland is SO passe). ;)

Kids (males) are withdrawn at this age because they really don't want to suffer the consequences of making a life-ending mistake; just let them know that there isn't a wrong move and you've got their back no matter what. Away from Mom they will open up.. big time.

At that age definitely Magic Mountain over all of them. No comparison to the rides. Teenage heaven.

I would consider you fortunate, given how quickly innocence is lost today. I think the norm now is that it feels like kids are actually growing up way too quickly.

Also, it's these kids who peak later that end up running the world. Enjoy your time together and if there's anyone here who could get you invitations to the Magic Castle you'll all have an awesome time.

    Have fun!

If you haven't left yet, there are actually things to do in LA besides being stuck in traffic and trying to figure out why stuff is so far apart...

At 16-18 years, depends on their interests; if movies or TV, there are studio tours in Burbank for Disney and the networks- much more realistic than Universal Studios and much cheaper.

If they are into the beach, stay in Santa Monica, go to the pier and make the short jaunt to Venice Beach, truly a great bohemian place to spend some time (and for which they will ever thank you for the roller-blading, bike riding girls and women in appropriate beach attire).

If you want to go a little further afield, go to Newport Beach, park near the Newport Pier, eat a chili-cheese Omelet at Charlies and have fun much like Santa Monica, only more laid back. You can also visit Ferrari Newport Beach and see more exotic cars per square mile than most other countries. If you golf, lots of choices, the most memorable would be Pelican Hill on the Newport Coast (drop them off at the beach and spend some time doing what you might like...). You could also go the other way and drive up to Malibu, although there's a lot less to see and do once there.

If they like history, museums, etc., one of the Space Shuttles is now in the Air and Space Museum in Exhibition Park near the Coliseum- you can also visit the USC campus next door. LA Live is a growing urban hotspot, home to the Nokia Theater (lots of concerts), Staples Center (Lakers and Clippers; it's possible to get Clips tickets, although not as easy as in past years), and the Convention Center- lots of restaurants, but more adult than teen in tone.

As said prior, if they like amusement parks, Magic Mountain is a little bit of a drive, but has a collection of roller coasters that should keep them busy for quite a while. Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park is also favored by the high school crowd due to the number of themed days they have at various times of the year. If they haven't been, Disneyland is also dressed for the holidays, and entertains kids of all ages (most adults secretly really enjoy the time there, too).

If they have mentioned anything specific, feel free to let me know and I'm confident one of us will have some ideas. If you miss track time, just get on the 405 as traffic lightens a little after rush hour and get a thrill with how closely natives follow one another at full speed...

    Best Regards, Bob H
