I mostly ignore the timing belt threads because the content hasn't changed significantly since the early ones in the old fchat archives that I read the 1st year or so of this century.

I must say that finnerty's summation is one of the best I've seen. It's well phrased, concise and right on!

"go get a the newest, latest, soulless, self parking Lexus coming off the line"

That's like calling your Ferrari a over powered go cart.

saw this one popped up again, so here is $0.02 from my own recent service experience.

It has been 4 years and 7k miles since my last belt change, currently my 360 spider have 17k miles. The 4 year old belts were still in very decent shape however I did notice the tensioner damper's gap is out further than factory spec. probably due to somewhat of belt stretch. All other acc. belt looked great, no cracks and with min. signs of wear.

I think the 3-4 year belt change recommendation is a good practice, but not mainly for the timing belts. It's a good interval to ck out other components of the car, the acc. belts, water pump, P/S pump and any area that needs attention. Especially on a mid engine car where you can't just pop the hood and visually see everything.

I also noticed that the seal on my left side oil exhaust tube was blown and required R&R. Two of the belt idler was not touching the belts (require adjustment), and the CAT was touching the CV boot heat shield (just needs minor adjustment). These little things otherwise would have gone unnoticed and cause a bigger issue down the road.

How long until we have to change the belts again? The dealer says 7 1/2 months or 365 miles whichever is first. That can't be right??? ;) :D

I'm thinking about replacing my timing belts. Is it OK to go for five years. Anybody know for sure?

Do you use super or regular gas? I think that matters. Oh, and how often do you change the oil?

I change the oil every 2 years or 200 miles......which ever comes first.
