That's a lot of 50's... Anyone know this car? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-Ferrari-550-Maranello-Mechanically-Sound-/221160671378?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item337e340892
I bought my 1999 550 five years ago with 59,000 on the odometer. It's a happy car. The car for sale is well-appointed with carbon fiber interior treatments. I think it's a good car to research further.
I missed that. Thks... From what I've been reading , high miles doesn't have to be a deal breaker. The statement "This vehicle mechanically sound" by itself seems to imply that there may be other issues. I don't recall ever seeing a 550 for that kind of money.
http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=279710 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=276712 Hagerty insurance price guy has an average 97 550 @ $49 853 If a dealer only giving u that might as well sell privately , second link I believe sold for under $60 Sdr
Note in one of the first pictures that the dash is pulling away from the windshield, exposing the padding/dash shell. Might not matter to the new owner, but costly (I think someone once wrote $8000 or $10,000) to repair to new condition.
I was going to go look at the car yesterday thinking they were not far from me in Santa Monica. When I called it turned out Beverly Hills Car Club is located in East LA. Didn't have time to go that far so hopefully I'll get a chance later. I want to see what the different price points will buy.
For that kind of money imho it is worth looking into. I recently bought a 550 with 28K. I would test the clutch(several inches of uptake before the clutc h engages). I would see how she pulls from low speed in 5th. I wouldelook at all the records to see if prior pwners skimped on maintenance. Last full belt service? all campaigns done? \sticky parts?brakes Ok? all keys? Tires/wheels ok? If car seems ok I would have a really thorough PPi done($400-500). If you get the car for about $50K you have room to fix things if needed as this would be a really cheap 550. Do a CarFax. Check body work for accidents. May be a good deal. Good luck. Let us know.
Car looks really great in the pix! That said, do a LOT of due diligence on that car......BHCC cars are generally bottom-feeders; some may look OK in web pix, but their inventory is mostly "with some/many needs"......just look at all the others on their website! This one really stands out. Ask if they rented it......Good luck!
I wouldnt be afraid. Go see the car. Drive it. You might be pleasantly surprised. The fact its been om enay for a while means nothing. It takes a very particular buyer for this car. If it were red and i was in the market for another car id have a deposit on it asap
That's what I paid two years ago for mine with same stats, it's been great. If i recall correctly, a dealer offered the seller only $35k on mine hence the price drop from $242k when new. I put 20k miles and spent $15k on maintenance: service, clutch, headers, resprayed and dash. Lots of fun, dive in.
Well , it appears that the numbers on this car are not all that out of the ordinary for what it is. Thks for the comments and encouragement. Had to fly back to cold Calgary last night so I won't be able to go take a look for a few weeks. If it's still there I'll report on what I see if no one beats me to it.
Hello, This 550 at that price sure grabs initial attention. I've emails "Sean" a few times and his replies are somewhat vague; always ending on "I suggest you have a PPI done". Great advice of course but I'd hate to go even there if, in person the car is an obvious "pass". Has anyone looked further at this car Or is anyone close enough and willing? His reply: *********************************** "Eddie, Attached are a few more receipts. The car is very presentable and has no records of paint work done. The front wheels have minor curb rash and the car runs very strong. Based on your questions and concerns, we highly recommend having a third party inspection. The car is located in our showroom. Address: 4576 Worth St. Los Angeles, CA 90063 Please let us know when we should expect the inspection. Thanks in advance. Sincerely, Sean Porrazzo ************************** He seems like a nice, reasonable guy. I asked specifically about last major (stamp missing from records book), sticky, motor mounts, etc. I did get a "no sticky" reply but no others except the email reply above. Any feedback from the forum? I have $50k burning a hole in my pocket. Or better said, I have a 550 craving that is killing me!!! Cheers, Eddie
Read the last few invoices from the indy shop. First that indy shop is known as the Ferrari junk yard. That's where you buy used Ferrari parts. That shop is the go to guy for all the dealers to get bottom feeders running. Even the famous guy from the central coast ships his cars to this guy. He is not a bad mechanic he just knows how to use a "nail" when you are supposed to use a "cotter pin". It is all good you just have to know the source. You can see that they are trying to chase ghosts with this car and get it out the door. There is a deferred maintenance item on the bill about two ignition harnesses. How did the shop decide this? Is this a guess or a solid diagnosis? Shop says injectors are good? compression good but no leak numbers and if you send injectors to be tested it is so cheap to while you are in there clean and balance injectors? You can tell by the bills they are chasing a missfire problem. Sometimes you can drive a 100 miles with no MIL then all of a sudden it is back! You can even pass smog if you can set the drive cycles and keep the MIL off long enough. The reason this has not sold? Well you need to be a DIY guy to buy this car and fix it. If you pay a shop you need a major then RR the injectors 12x$50, RR harnesses?, RR with good wires which are a couple $1000 for the set? What about coils? Water pump while you are in there? If you are like me you would be putting in all the SRI stuff the hoses and Harnesses and gold kit just to stop chasing the ghosts. This thing could cost big bucks at the shop and then you have to get to the interior. So cheap car high risk cost $$ to make it a good car. Easier to buy a good car at $70-80K and know you have not bought a Ferrari door stop.
And a misfire can lead to a burned up catalyst. They list for 6k EACH. Ask me how I know. If the car had these miles and had been comprehensively maintained, that is a different story. No matter what you buy, you should have 10k in your mental budget for sorting purposes. Scott
Thanks guys. Billy Bob, when you write, I pay attention (which is why my 355 has the GCK and a few other Helms goodies ) Running away as I type... Edie
This is the type of car I LOVE. Persistent problem that needs attention.. sort this, sort that and the car is perfect from then on. I'd consider it if I were looking and had the spare cash on hand... OTOH I'm a DIY'er...
No need to run away...just know what you are buying. A good deal is when both parties are happy. Cost is not an issue. If BHCC could get $70k for the car they would. They are at $50k and sitting on it. They know this is not a great example. We know it is not a great example but it can be made into a great car if enough is put into it...dollars or sweat or both!
