    Hi Folks,

Interested in some advice from 612 owners. I’ve looked through the two pages of 599/612 posts- just not much here- unless it’s buried somewhere else.

I’m a current owner of a 87’ 328 GTS and former owner of a 2005 430 F1… I wish I were still the current owner of that one.

I’ve settled on a 612. I also finally found a red/tan one with shields (I know, common taste). Well equipped and coming from my local Maserati dealer that services most of the Ferrari’s in town. Just had belts done in prep for sale.

I knew about the potential cracked headers going into the 430 and found tons of what to look for in purchasing the 328 from reading through FChat. While I’m not ASE certified, doing basic service on my cars is therapeutic for me- so I know how to dig a little deeper when looking. What should I look for in the 2005 612? Is there a compelling reason for me not to get a 2005 and wait for a 2006+ to drop into my range (no more than 130k).

    Thank you in advance.

I have a 2005 612. Love it. Bought it with 20K miles. put on about 7K since. Had trouble with the window switches and the side view mirror controls. Nothing major with powertrain though. Heard that the t-bar for switching to reverse can break easily. How many miles on yours?

Just less than 16k on this one. I did check the t-bar, seems pretty solid compared to some used Maserati's with the same switch. I drove it today- everything seems to work normally. Only issue for me is the wheels- they are a expensive AVUS custom wheel, but not my style. I'll likely try to find a OEM set.

    It's listed as sale pending.

I have eyed that one for a while. It looks really good in online.

I agree with the wheels as you suggested? Any chance you ask the dealer to swap them out for you? They are custom and he has another in stock ( with modular wheels Yum). Who did your PPI?

I have fantasized about the 612 mostly to avoid the fights to go for a ride from my boys!
How was the drive? I was always skittish about them because of the perception of twitchy transmissions? Kinda like my wife's QP - a bit twitchy for every day IMHO (the MASER, I have no experience in the 612, yet).

Please if you execute, let us know. Again looks great in red and rare to see.

    Scott

2005 had a clutch sensor campaign. It required the entire transmission to come out. Make sure it has had this done. That's really about it. These cars are pretty reliable. Look for any leaking fluids around the F1 pump and try to peak into the clutch inspection port to get a visual on the remaining disc material. Good luck. Please change those ghetto wheels.

The other posts are indeed buried somwhere else :)

Just look at the bottom of the page (of the topic overview withing the 599/612 section), where you´ll find "display options". Change the setting from "from the last 2 months" to "from the beginning", click on "show threads" and instead of two pages, you´ll have 51 pages to go through - have fun :)

    Ciao,

    Lars T.

612s really don't have many issues, though. They are wonderful cars. Ferrari really got it right the first time with this one.

My pleasure - it´s never too late to discover something new :)

Good luck in finding a nice 612, I´m saving up for my first Ferrari myself (will be a 550), hope to reach that dream in 18 months from now.

I'd highly recommend Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s over the Pirellis. I just swapped out a set on my 612 and what an improvement! Noticeably quieter and better responsiveness and traction. Many others seem to agree that the pirelli's are junk. Yes the Pirelli's look cooler with the red logo and all, but the car is better without them.

    Update.

    I now own a 2005 612 :)

New question- does anyone happen to know if the wheels that came with the car will fit any other Ferrari bolt pattern? They are AVUS wheels- 20" front and 22" rear. I'll be returning the car to stock.

Thank you again for the help.

Erik- Beginning with the 612, Ferrari went to a 114.3 mm x 5 bolt pattern from the old 108 mm x 5 pattern that ended with the Scuderia/16M. 599 20" Challenge wheels fit a 612 beautifully. Here is a list of the late model OEM wheel sizes, including the 612, which had three OEM wheel packages. 599 HGTE wheels will fit a 612, as will 458 wheels, so there are lots of choices in OEM wheels.

OEM 612 19" modulars and the 18" F, 19" R combination are relatively inexpensive used, as many owners moved up to 612 or 599 Challenge wheels.
