I well remember the days of pre-qualy - Was working in it at the time. If we made it in it was a success. All very well & good. Trouble was a tire war that meant we never had any decent tires. "Big HP motors" - Other than Ferrari everyone was using the DFV with ~550HP.

Than they were at their peak for a few years. But again, in the scheme of things, so what? There's no way you or anyone else could detect a few seconds over a 100 second lap. It just doesn't matter. They remain the quickest things around a road course, they're closer than ever and they can even occasionally overtake.

The FIA, not the Pygmy!..... The FIA asked Pirelli for tires that degraded and that's what they got. That it took 'em half the season to get their heads around 'em is great IMO; What's wrong with close racing and a good show? "I'm a purist and loved the days when there was no overtaking and only 2 or 3 cars finished on the lead lap"? [Often separated by half a minute or so.]

What's wrong with, eg, the race we just watched in Brazil? Phenomenal stuff IMO.

I hear what you're saying. I've already said there should be more consequences for falling off. Maybe we should have a death or two every year to really improve the show?......

    Cheers,
    Ian

Should have said "big displacement motors" which were big power for the limited aero on the cars at the time. In the 90s there was pre qualifying and there were Ferrari V12s, Honda V12s, Renault V10s, Ford V8s, etc. all running. My point was there was crazy engine development going on and loads of teams were wanting to run.

I notice. The problem is now, with the frozen engines (and even weaker ones down the pipeline) the cars are like slot cars, too much downforce and too little power.

I wasn't necessarily referring to Bernie. F1 is still worse off for it. Just like the stupid SDS (Sitting Duck System) -excuse me - DRS and banning everything under the sun.

Lol, why is it always the 60s with you? The 80s and 90s had great racing. You only try to use the 60s to demonstrate your point.

    It rained.

Knew this was coming, try to flip around what I'm saying like I'm bloodthirsty. Similar to people pulling the race card when they are losing in an argument. I kinda expected better from you.

Luca saved Ferrari F1 from the Old Man in the '70s and was the Company's savior in large part in the '90s for the road cars going forward. He pushed Ferrari road cars to be track worthy or very close from the factory, something that had been missing for a time. I have immense respect for Luca.

Bernie is an egomaniac first, despot second and a ham third.
