Not sure about -78. Original lighter on my -75 GT4. I thought it was broken first, thought it should be pulled out. Really like the somewhat odd function. Nice original piece.

    Jeff,

Seems that it could well be the right one for a '78; I am no expert on these, but have a friend who own a '78 GTB and is very sharp on what is right, even for the smallest detail.
He said that the right ones for a '78 are these, which he calls "pram" cigarette lighters:

Yours seems to look alike to me?

P.S: 4 am or not, the Norton Commando is a very good choice!

I suppose this way of lighting a cigarette was deemed safer than one that actually came out. (no chance of dropping on your lap at high speed)

The top two pictures look like what is in my original late 1978 GTS that i have had for 30 years.

You drop the cig in,a nd push down the outer ring, when it pops, the cig is lit.

Doesn't work too well for those cig lighter power tap gizmos though. No easy place to charge your cell phone in one of these cars. There is the emergency light socket under the dash somewhere, but I am not sure it is the correct size for a cig lighter power adapter

That's what it looks like on a '81 GTSi.

Center button pushes in, ridged outer ring stays put. When hot, center button pops out.

Fixed element lighters are correct, for the early 308s.

Hard to tell from the first pic, but looks like it. My '78 had the same one.

Yes, that blurry picture is the one off ebay, so I won't get a good look at it until it arrives. If it looks good, then I'll need to figure out how to remove the center console- seems that may be the only way of installing it.

Thanks everybody for the input. Jeff

I forgot that I have an original 308 GTB and GTS sales brochure- actually I have 3 of them for some inexplicable reason. The brochures I have appear to be dated 1977, 11/79, and 4/80, but they all appear to be identical. (If anybody needs one, just let me know. I'll only keep one, no use hoarding them.)

IF (and that's a big "if" I'd wager) a contemporary sales brochure can be trusted, here's the type cigarette lighter orginally supplied.

A friend of mine has a 1979 and that is the type of lighter that's in there.

    Very cool brochure! PM sent.

Looks likes a shaker, it vibrates when it hits low frequency.

    Jeff,

I have the same lighter in my 1976 308 GTB. It does not have the PRAM imprint, however. The imprinted ones were later production by the original equipment manufacturer. I'm not sure when they began appearing with the PRAM lettering.
