    I am not sure if 12 is the model year as all Jalpas have 12 in front of the chassis number. The four Jalpas I have owned, the VINs match on all components.

    yep. For example, my old Jalpa was DLA12071

    D= year code (1983)
    L = build location (Sant 'Agata)
    A12 = Lamborghini Mfg. Code
    071 = serial number

    I said that 12 is the model type (not the model year) - in the same way that the P250 has 15xxx and P300 has 20xxx series vins (with some exceptions).

    Thanks to Mike for explaining precisely what the preceding letters mean.

    Clearly Eric's three bodies and vins do not match. If as you say the components matched the vin on your four Jalpas, are you referring to the interior trim components? I would have expected the body components such as the headlight pods to match the body number.

    Regarding your post #7 do you know the body number of your car? Clearly some components match the vin (185) but is it possible that those marked 176 match the body number?

    The bodies and chassis were done just like Ferrari. There is an Assembly number, a body number, and a chassis number. On 308's there is a thread on the assy numbers which are located on the left rear shock tower near the two coils. Most times two of the numbers will be the same. Based off the chassis (frame) number. I had a euro Uracco a USA Jalpa and a euro Jalpa. You will drive yourselves nuts trying to make sense of how they were doing things on the lines back then. :)

    My best approximate guess would be that the body number correlates to the 176 number on this car - I'm thinking most of the parts were put together and the car mfg. in 1983..

    I am curious what the body builder exactly supplied to Lamborghini - what was pre-assembled, and then what was actually completed at the Lamborghini factory. I'm guessing the body specific components were supplied (body panels attached, car wired / electrics, interior installed, etc) and then the powerplant / mechanicals were added in at the factory..

    What I would do for a concise build sheet on these..

    According to Andrew Morland's book published in 1985 "the Jalpa bodyshell comes in virtually complete by road from Bertone, in Turin. There is a picture of five complete bodyshells bodies in primer sitting on dollies. The bodies were then sprayed and finished at Lamborghini factory.

    The bodies are completely deviod of any electrics or other parts - simply the bodies were delivered. So in my view doors, front compartment lid, boot lid and headlight buckets should bear the same number as the Bertone body number, which Eric says is stamped on the left damper turret.

    So again my question to you is what is the body number of your car?!

    The original hand written build sheets are sadly no longer available from the factory. However the P300 and Silhouette build sheets in my posession have the body number on them.

    IF the left rear strut top is definitive, it's 176 - ;)

    I haven't had a need to peek under the headlights, so the bucket numbers are still unknown...

    Hand written build sheets - those were the days...

    That's great. Do you recall which parts were marked with which number? I'm thinking/hoping that in your case everything apart from the body parts were marked with the vin to ensure the correct colour/spec components were used in line with the order/build sheet.

    Interesting, however Countachs also have 12 in the same location i.e. Countach VIN: ZA9CA05A2KLA12530.

  11. David, 382 looks great. Nice 4 car garage in the background also.

    Hmmm.....the LP400 and S1 Countach were originally 112xxx series. That is why I thought the Jalpa was 12xxx series

    What I did not appreciate was that with the introduction of the revised VIN arrangements this changed to CLA12xxx on the 500S GLA12xxx on the QV and HLA12xxx with the 25th Anniversary, so that both Jalpa and Countach were using the same 12xxx series.

    However....
    When Jalpa was CLA12001-28 approx Countach was CLA12330 + approx
    When Jalpa was DLA12031-91 approx Countach was DLA12549 + approx
    So although they both used the same A12xxx series there was no clash in any year.

    Many thanks to Vince Hill Automotive in Joplin, MO for the incredible work on my '84 Jalpa!

    During the restoration:
    Engine pulled and since to Evans for a complete rebuild.
    Clutch rebuild
    Electronic ignition system replaced and programed perfectly
    Replaced all gas lines with aircraft braided stainless steel
    Repaired/rebuilt cooling system
    Replaced brake lines and master cylinder
    Fabricated a new air induction system

    This car runs the best since I bought it over 15 years ago and also had the best service experience of any dealers that I used. I would highly recommend Vince for your exotic. I will get pictures posted soon.

    Body Number: The rear left body fender, front fender, underside of dash - stamped into the metal - the fiberglass engine cover and the carpet has it written on the underside.

    Serial number: plate on top of dash, stamped into right rear engine strut top, as well as the usual attached metal plates locations..

    - seems pretty much as you were thinking

    In fact if your carpet number = body number it seems the body number (not the vin) was used to track "other" components on your car - the same as on Eric's cars.

    Congrats. What ignition system did you have put in? Any pictures of all the work and what car number do you have?

    Welcome to the board!

    We put in a haltech system. With this it also helped greatly reduce any fire risk. With all the work I had done I do not feel I sacrificed performance and interestingly the engine also runs slightly cooler. I drive this car at least 4 days weekly and it is extremely reliable.
