I wish I would have picked it up but I saw a copy of "Original Ferrari V8" by Keith Bluemel at a used book store for very little (I think $20). I should have googled it on my phone, after seeing prices its worth driving back to the store. I am trying to save money so only wanted one book so I went with "Duesenberg, the Mightiest American Motor Car" for the same price. I have always been interested but never knew much background.

Mine is signed by Piero Ferrari. It also has very few pictures of cars but one of the very few is Enzo standing in front of a 308 GT4.....

 

I sort of thought he was just a little over enthusiastic.

This one for sale is damaged and still expensive!

Then Shell Italia did another one, circa '60 on the F1 designs only, apparently, it's in the same auction

I have a questions regarding book collectibility. Obviously some Ferrari books may have been produced in different languages, some printed only in Italian. Some books printed in Italian and English individually, NOT combined into one copy. Now I know some of you may have different answers to this question as it is very subjective. If we can, let's forget content and readability. If the book was known to be very desirable and suppose it was a limited edition of let's say 500 copies with 400 printed in English and 100 in Italian. Would you choose the Italian version based on rarity as a book collector not based on readability if you do not speak or read Italian, but based on the fact that it is rarer?

Also, what if a Ferrari book was only ever printed in Italian, no English copies in existence, leaving you no other option. Would you buy it even though you can't read it?

What if there was a book that was printed in an English version and separate Italian version and the Italian version was the rare limited and most expensive copy. Would you buy it for rarity and then buy the cheaper non-limited English version for reading?

Thanks guys! I'm asking because aside from my passion for cars, I also have a passion for the collectibility aspect of books as well. Based on this I might prefer the rarer Italian version of a book that I can't read because it's rarer, not sure though.

I would appreciate your thought's on this guys. If you have chosen the Italian versions of a book, perhaps you could give me examples of what they are.

I have also a weakness for the printed matter...

If a book is available in both English and Italian i would go for the English edition.
It is easier to read. As for the value the English editions are often MORE expensive as the Italian... More people can understand English

However many important Ferrari-books are never translated into English. Take by example the book by Zagari called "Ferrari 1947-1953".

If the book is only available in Italian it doesn't stop me from buying. Together with 'Google translate' and the help of other sources i can pretty much figure things out.

I suppose the question is: are you buying the book to read it, or are you buying it solely as a collectible that you hope will accrue in value?

Consider another hobby I participate in that has collectors: plastic model kits. Some people will buy rare kits to build them, but many will buy them solely for their collectible value. Not only do they have no intentions of building these kits, but if they have the original shrink-wrap, they wouldn't dare open the boxes, since in their minds the shrink-wrapped kits are more valuable than identical open ones, even though the contents inside might actually be defective. (In more than one case, a kit that I bought had the contents for a different kit inside the box!)

 

First, thank you to everyone so far.

It's difficult for me because I have multiple interests in the books. My interests are in the cars, book collecting, and rarity. Not so much investment, I don't sell my books. So if I want the rare Italian language I have to sacrifice the information I could have gained. When the books are expensive you have to choose just one.

 

Have you read the Italian version of Forghieri on Ferrari? I have ordered the forthcoming English version and am wondering if it is worthwhile.

No , i have not read it yet. Mainly because some Italian friends told me from the start the book would also become available in English. English edition will be published appr. May 2013. Should be an interesting read!

Has a 6pg article about Alberto Ascari by that Nathan Beehl chap. Also articles on 60 years of Pininfarina, Gianni Rogliatti and Ferrari Story, 250GTO tribute etc.

Not always... the english version of "Le Mie Gioie Terribili" was published by Hamisch Hamilton in 1963 with the title of "The Enzo Ferrari Memories" and sells for half the original italian version by Capelli Editore.

 

You're right in this case. That's why i stated 'often' instead 'always'
This book was a 3th party translation of an official Factory publication which was printed in many different languages. Buy this book in French , German , or let's say in Dutch and it will be even less expensive than the English copy...

In this case the (original) Italian book is more valuable.
