It has been a great car. Perfect? No. But pretty damn good.
I just have personally been very surprised I bought the 348 and am still just not satisfied. I think this is technically the 25th car I have owned since I have been driving so I have a decent amount of experience with cars.
I don't need the attention when driving it and I have found I am fairly uncomfortable with people knowing I own it. I never thought that would happen. But even though I know it is no more expensive than a Nissan 370z other people don't and they just make assumptions that you have far more money than you in fact do.
I just have found in the last few months looking at other cars wondering if I would prefer something else. Before I do make any sort of decision I will think long and hard before just kinda jumping into something else.
My other personal issue is I am a tinkerer. I like modifying cars and making them more my own. Other than swapping the steering wheel most other mods are beyond my comprehension of cost. I would love to swap the seats but as some other owners have found it is not a cheap proposition. I am not a fan of the "Ferrari Tax". Well really who is right? Ha ha.
My only other gripe is the door panels. I need to take the passenger one apart to get the speaker out. Why on the hell is it four separate pieces? What kinda design is that? I guess I wouldn't care if I paid someone else to do it but since I like working on things myself I find it to be a head scratcher for sure.
Most other things on the car though I find fairly easy. Surprisingly I like the fact you have to/can drop the motor to do the belts. Since my car has a minor leak from one of the valve covers at that point I will have the motor in front of me with 360 degrees of unobstructed access. That is something I am rather looking forward to.
I swapped my triple seals pretty easily and it would have been even easier if I had a lift which I am planning on installing in the future.
When I do my belts I will be doing it myself more than likely which will be a nice and slow process. I would love to do some clean up and getting the valve covers redone etc.
Part of me is just thinking of getting an additional car to tinker with. I know a friend of mine has a Ferrari and a modified Audi. It seems to have worked for him.
But anyway I just wanted to vent a little. I feel very fortunate to own the 348. If we weren't planning for snow tonight I would be taking it today. I do really want a new steering wheel though.... Lol.

One of the things (of many) that I love about the 348 is tinkering with it is so straightforward. Systems are pretty simple and pretty easy to get to. More modern cars are too sophisticated in their electronics, computers, build techniques etc etc. Looking at the just the steering wheel of the latest Ferraris gives me heartburn. Looking at the engine compartment of a Mclaren does the same. Enjoy that 348!

The point is I really don't want to sell. I just think about it. Believe me the car has it perks for sure.
And I was thinking more about it after I typed this all out and realized why am I complaining. Ten years ago I wouldn't have imagined I would finally have gotten one. And in the exact color and style I wanted.
My plan next winter is to do a mini restoration. Replace the seats or get them redone, body stuff cleaned up and fixed and the major. I would like to do the engine stuff while the car is in the shop though. Not sure if that is possible.
And I really want to "challenge" the car out a bit. Basically make the car a bit more my style while taking some cues from the 5 challenge cars.

Only in the right scenario and for a good reason I would. Like if I decided I wanted a 355 or 360. Or wanted to open a new business.

+1 Same here. In fact most new SUVs and Pickup Trucks cost more than a 348. Crazy times. :)

You need to start on some easy engine mods to re-engage you. Here is a partial list that you can easily handle.

    1. have your throttle bodies bored. You remove them and send them to Rob.
    2. get a replacement exhaust system - swap to a single can high flow set up with cats. Talk to gothspeed.
    3. remove your intake plenum and smooth and bore everything, esp. the runners.
    4. replace your wheels with 355 wheels.
    5. add stainless steel brake hoses.
    6. Upgrade your brake pads.

That will keep you busy for a bit and turn up around 340 crank HP.

    You want more?

    1. add a lip spoiler to hold down the front end more.
    2. add a rear wing (see plugzit's posts in tech on this). He'll gladly make you the bracket adapters.
    3. get new seats from OMP USA.
    4. add an interior crossbar to mount ...
    5. add seat harnesses.
    6. get rid of any excess weight including a sound system.
    7. have your shocks rebuilt and revalved. You remove them and send them out.

Enough? Have fun and get back into it!

Oh, and have you tried accessing the doors from the other side instead? Remove the strakes on the outside and make sure the window is all the way up. :)

You sound bored with your 348. Where is the passion, the love for this car? Its a great car, your story was more like I wanted to own a Ferrari that I can afford and this was it. Not alot of thought put in so it seems. Even if you gotten a 355, 360, you wouldn't be satisfied. I think you are a mod and tuner guy and should have stuck with the Z. Ferraris are best left as they were intended is my $.02. Hope you do get to enjoy your car and not have to worry about what others think of it or you have to modify the hell out of it only to be disappointed.

Having a Ferrari in Colorado this time of year is a little tough as there are not as many nice days to take them out due to the snow/ice/ gravel applied to roads...

Driftfan, I would recommend that you wait until spring and take it on a proper drive thought the mountains which is where cars like ours belong. My brother in his Elise and I in my 348 went for a drive up the Thompson Canyon, through Estes, over Trail Ridge road (highest continuous paved road in the US) to Grand Lake for lunch, and then back. That was the best day I had in my 348, and I cannot wait to do it again! For now, I am fine taking it to Starbucks once or twice a week on the sunny/clear days, I am not driving much anyway as I am waiting for a slot to open so I can get a few issues sorted.

Wait till spring and see how you feel. Maybe we can get a 348/355 drive organized!

    Thanks Vince, I'm flattered. ;)

I think the F355 (even 360) and previous cars are great candidates for enthusiasts who like to tinker. Ernie, Goth and I are just a few among the many that have made positive improvements without sacrificing the 'soul' of the car. It can be done just keep the flashy stickers and such far, far away.

    Jamie,

I know how you feel, I am also a tinkerer and love building cars. My advice is to enjoy the Ferrari for what it is and get another "project car" I like tinkering on Esprits and currently have three in different stages of completion. I am also starting a 1917 Race car build.. So if you have space, find an exciting project to wrench on..

BTW I will make your seat covers when your ready for new seats...

    Cheers~!

I take offense to the I didn't think about what I was getting and bought what I could afford. Absolutely not true at all. I wanted this exact 348 for twenty years. Twenty. Pretty long time. I could have bought pretty much what I wanted within reason. I looked at a lotus Elise, 911 turbo, lotus esprit hell even a delorean. I am a car guy, always have been. 25 cars is a lot but that has also slowed way down in the last six years. Also I never wanted a 370z. Not a fan of that car just used it as an example.
It isn't a lack of satisfaction.
Jason and George you both have given me something to think about. My buddies 328 had a lot of very tasteful mods. Which is what I was thinking about doing with the 348. Challenge rims, omp seats and steering wheel and just immaculate.
I am planning on pulling both door panels apart next month and get them recovered where the leather has shrunk.
It amazed me personally that the previous owner dropped 15,000 last time it was in the shop but didn't bother to fix any of the interior stuff. Like the mirrors. It was notated in the work order they were non functioning but the previous owner elected to have the prancing horse put on the front grill instead. Also why if you spend 15,000 would you just not do the mirrors too? Seems like a no brainer.
I am rather surprised how this thread has gone. Seems like the idea of someone not being 100 percent satisfied with a Ferrari is sacralege. If everyone was satisfied there would never be any used ones on the market.
So the 348 isn't exactly what I had built it up in my mind to be. There are far worse things in this world. Falcon I did drive down to larkspur and took a back road back to castle rock. Took me a good part of an hour or so. Truly was a great drive. And am looking forward to the spring.
I also disagree that ferraris should be left as is. Do I think I should get my seats recovered with Louis V material? Hell no. But if there is a way to make it a little faster, a little lower, a little better handling (rear spacers made a huge difference) a little louder then why not? I doubt anything will decrease the value much if at all for what I want to do with it.
    355 rims or challenge rims
    Momo suede steering wheel
Still debating the seats but I would love to do some sort of race bucket in red.
    Radio removed
    Test pipes
    Fender shields removed
And just the little things fixed that were neglected.

I am going to get a third car. I prefer driving a car over my jeep and then I can really start digging into the Ferrari to take care of what I need to take care of.

+1, We all get a little discouraged at times, especially when we have to pay exorbitant prices for something that we know can't cost a fraction of that to produce. But when these cars are running right (which mine does most of the time), there is NOTHING like the experience of driving one on a beautiful day.

....very very true. I am the same. To the point of deliberately avoiding telling people outside the "inner circle". Particularly work collegues. You get into a conversation about cars, mention you like cars and your in a car club and....oops...too late !! what car club ?? You almost muffle the word the fffrryrriiii club. Then its the predictable 'ooh really you have Ferrari' wow you must be loaded. There goes the next couple of years of pay rises and any possibility of promotion as your boss walks off with that plastic smile we all see every now and then :) !!
