cost of new interior?

You are correct you can do a 308 for far less then $10,000, but for period correct leather and carpet the material it's self is very expensive.

 

My car has other issues, like a passenger window that wont roll down out of the f'ing blue.

The early 308 seat patterns are laughably simple and the door panels are a flat panel. If anyone tells you there is alot of labor there,, is, well, pulling your leg. The diamond panels in a Lusso, sure. But A 308?.... Uh, no.

I'm not posting pics. I got a 3k interior, and my car isn't even a leather interior, I know what a 3k interior looks like.
Embarrassed to post, no, just can't waste my time. If those paying 3k are happy, I'm happy, just make sure they use glue that sticks.
You won't be winning any awards that's for sure.

I see all those California custom restoration shows on tv and some of their interiors are laughable! Many people can't even tell the difference between right and wrong.

 

Just curious. What holds the hides on the seat frames. I did a couple of old vettes which used hog rings. Similar for a 308 or some other torture method.

Crikey. I hate hog rings. Wasn't there an upholsterer doing seats recently for the carb and injected seats? I thought I read the quality was rather good.

There is no doubt that the interiors you see on TV are generally of laughable quality. That said California, perhaps more than anywhere else in North America, has the greatest concentration of experts in the field of vehicle restoration and customizing. You are spoiled for choice there which results in some excellent interior shops and good pricing because of the level of competition.

Getting back to the OP he asked for the cost of rugs, seats, and door skins on a 328 to excecute a color change to the interior. From my experience this job should be able to be done at a top standard for approx $5-6K including installation. Adding consoles, dash, headliners, and other trimmings are another story and can top the $10K mark for quality work but the original ask is a pretty straightforward job and the materials are not that much. A couple of the posters here have 308 GT4's and an interior for those cars is a whole other ball of wax as they have rear seats and trim panels and consume a LOT more material.

I was under the assumption that GAAH was the way to go? I know they are pricey but IIRC from searches here GAAH and Wilton Coe highly recommended.

That said, I'd trust any of the CA interior guys Steve Moal uses!

 

Choosing an interior guy is an important decision as it will play the largest role in the quality of the result. This is not to discount the value in proper material selection but in the end it is the quality of the installer that counts the most. I have pretty extensive experience with interior guys from the garage installer right to the Pebble Beach best of show winner and can offer the following advice in choosing someone:

1. Experience is key. Actually see the work your prospect has done and make sure that they have lots of experience. 20 years at two interiors a year does not constitute a 20 year expert. You want someone who does this full time and understands the behaviour of materials and how to handle them. This is achieved through time and practice and there is NO substitute for that. Owning a sewing machine does not automatically make one an interior expert.

2. Judge results and not talk. Actually see some completed work and judge for yourself.

3. Get an estimate in writing. Any pro with experience will do this. Anyone who will not put an estimate to paper is an amateur and you are asking for trouble.

The targa top cover was $60, I reused the original fasteners.

The trunk zipper cover was $90.

The GAHH seat cover kit was about $1650, the door panel kit was just shy of $500.

The Wilton wool carpet kit would have been about $700 if it was available in my color.

The upholster charged me $800 to sew up new carpet (good quality OEM Cadillac stuff), install seat covers, door panels and redo the rear shelf, roof, A and B pillars, as I said, no dash or console, the console would have been fairly easy, not so the dash. He spent about 3 days on it. A four seat car would have probably doubled the price, add a dash, and i could see maybe $7K, but we are in the 308 forum. Any more than $7K, IMO is a Ferrari tax, to cover for the anal retentive types that want absolute perfection. (I had a Jag once, one repair shop flat out said jag owners were assh*oles and wouldn't work on the car, even a simple AC repair).

I told the upholsterer to use new seat foam, he called me after he got the car apart and said the foam in there was better quality than what he could get,and suggested we reuse it, as it would outlast new foam.

This is a $30K Targa top car that gets driven, not some 3 million $$ rare collector car that may justify a some what better grade of leather, but what I now have looks better than just about any other Ferrari i have ever seen, that is more than 10 years old.

I would say that your interior looks excellent!

Indeed, buying the seat skins, etc can be very cost effective. In my BB I explored replacing the seats and I just could not do it, as the seats were in excellent shape... except for the minor scuffing that comes with use. I did, however, find the Italian firm that does a lot of the Ferrari interiors for Ferrari themselves... and they were charging around 1200 Euro (if memory serves the currency conversation translated to about $2000) for the BB seat skins... Which I thought was excellent value given the cost of quality leather and the the intricacies of the BB seat ... which is much more complicated than the carbed or even the injected GTB/S seats.

No matter, you did very well on all accounts!

Just wondering, how did you get the prices you paid?

 

I'm happy with their quality. In both materials and stitching. I bought a seat set, and a half hide for trim. They're hardly inexpensive, but very reasonable for what you get. Re-Originals is also excellent. They helped me with an amazing dash.

Get recommendations, and look for yourself. That crema/nero 308GTS looks great!

 

For less than $2000 Vic will do the front seats INSTALLED. And he does nice work.

Look at this thread. I don't see why you should pay $2200 when you can get nice quality product for half the price. My installed cover in the pics was done by me, results installed by him are much better. Look at my Mondial seats.

From the same website, the leather console cover kit is $847, so the total is about $4618 just for material only, I guess you still need the fabric for the rear shelve and roof liner. Wonder what is the cost to have all these professionally installed?

 

And BTW he does the black stripes in vynil like the factory. He used my originals for patterns and replicated them exactly.

 

I ordered them expecting those prices, they invoiced me at about 70% of those, probably since i bought direct. Or, maybe they thought i was worthy of some charity discount.

I am sure they sell at discount to shops so shops can make markup. I bought them through my company, but I didn't say what my company did.
