I think I want to buy an OBD2 reader. A while back I had some issues with the car and Alohamickey was very generous with his time and stuff to have helped me. I still owe you one.
I think I want one of my own. This should pay for itself should something comes up and points us in the right direction.
which model do members here own and which is the consensus best one to get.
    Thanks.

I bought a cheap @$$ one on Amazon that works great in all my cars..

$20 Autel did it for me: http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiScan-MS300-Diagnostic-Vehicles/dp/B001LHVOVK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357217280&sr=8-1&keywords=obd2+reader

FYI I tried the cheap chinese bluetooth and USB readers on ebay that are "supposed" to work with your computer. Never got any of them to work right..

Then (I know you know this I'm just being anal) go to ferraridatabase.com and download the "360 ECU error codes" to lookup any that might pop up.

I bought the same one as Mo T at Autozone. Reads and clears, and it's easy to use.

Don't buy a cheap one. It's a tool, you will be able to use it on many vehicles to come.

If you spend $150-200 you are probably fine.

I recommend the Innova 3130 ( amazon ). It has advanced features like reading freeze frame data from the instant the code was triggered. It can also show real time values for TPS, O2, Load, MAF, etc.

I bought an Innova and it's very good. I also just purchased an ultragauge for my DD and it's really very very very good indeed. In fact, I might buy one for the Ferrari too.

Looking forward to hearing what you think of it Trent. As I say, I have one in my DD and think it's awesome. Can't go wrong for $60 either.

I have an Autel that provides freeze frame, live data, as well as reads codes. Works great so I bought a second one since they are cheap $45 on amazon. You can pay $200 for the same functionality. I was skeptical on Autel but I guess everything is made in china and this one worked very well on all sorts of cars that I have.

At first blush, this device looks amazing.

They make it look like the display is remote, maybe Blue Tooth?

But the FAQ says there are no batteries and it's all powered by the OBD2 interface. So there has to be a cable running from the OBD2 interface under the steering wheel to the display.

Limits where you can mount the display.

It's definitely not wireless. It plugs into the OBD port and is thus connected via a cable. Yeah, wireless would be nice, but it does work well -- the display is crystal clear, and once you get the hang of it it's really easy to program custom gauges into it and display only the info that you're interested in. I like it a lot.

I just bought an Innova 3100...the problem is it asks you for the make of the vehicle if it does not recognize it.....unfortunately, Ferrari is not one of the choices. The only Italian car listed is Alfa Romeo.

    Any suggestions?

Autel makes some full featured products. By my comparison, it looks like the Autel AL519 is the way to go for that brand (right now).

    Autel AL519:
    List $160
    Amazon: $90

Innova 3130: (3130,3140,3160 all graph, the 3150 does not)
    Retail: $350
    Amazon: $169

    Innova 3160:
    Retail: $459
    Amazon: $179

If I was to buy a new one today, I would likely get the Autel, assuming it works as well as the Innova 3130 which has been a priceless tool in my automotive tool box.

Comparison Chart: *A little outdated, only has the AL510

Hey Trent, did your Ultragauge arrive yet? If so, your impressions of it?

Got it. Tested driving in my Lexus, not in the F430 yet. The fuel consumption is very close, the gauges are very configurable, it supposedly clears codes and displays them, but I have no CE codes to test. It works quite well and is nice and small.

I wish it would graph the channels, it has a graphic screen, so that would just be software.

    The price was great.

How does it compare to my Innova 3130? Pretty close. The innova lists all parameters in real time on one screen which is very handy, note that you have to scroll up and down after so many. The innova will pull the freeze frame data from the CE event, not sure the Ultragauge does this, will test upon my next CE.

The Ultragauge is "cooler", and for a long cross country trip may provide some light entertainment for the passenger.

Thanks for all the info, comes at a good time because I have been doing a lot of research on these. I want freeze frame and the ability to download to my laptop, so I had ordered the Innova 3160, which is on backorder from Amazon (I can pay $60 more and get it right away but the car is asleep for the winter anyway).

So I was tempted to cancel my order and go with the Autel 519 but I saw you had to move up to the 619 to get ABS and SRS, which the 3160 has. The 619 is still cheaper than the 3160 and it is in stock, so I may go with that one anyway and cancel the other.

I know its an old thread, I have issues with the Innova 3160b. I can not connect to the f355. All my other scanners work without issues
Not only that when I plug it in it turns on my active suspension light LOL

BTW I do like that OTC in the picture, I think I need one :)

I use $20 ELM327 blutetooth with the BBerry and Android Torque app. Love it.. Works fantastic and small enough I leave it plugged into the OBD2. Gives my more realtime gauges than a GTR :-0)
