The story is in the Southern Cal forum but wanted to bring it to the attention of CS section. RIP.
Here is the link to the story: http://www.vcstar.com/news/2013/jan/03/coroner-notified-after-car-crash-near-point-mugu/ Be safe guys.
That sucks. RIP to the driver and I hope the passenger has a speedy recovery. Man, how fast was he going to have flipped all those times and to burst into flames? Track people, use the damn track.
That's one heck of a reality check. Very sad. Be careful out there. Life can change so very, very quickly.
Indeed extremely so and not sure if this was wet but so many deaths are been caused by Pirelli PZero Corsas on CS's & SCUD's when there are many better & safer wet alternatives out there, change them ....
+1 The vast amount of 360CS with accident history are the straight consequences of: 1) Very little rear toe-in with a soft spring package (tends to toe-out on load/unload) 2) Heat cycled out tires (Pirelli Corsa System), they offer less grip than mediocre Summer tires. This will never pair well with any car, especially cars with high horsepower. Driving at a moderate pace with a car with (1) and (2) is a recipe for disaster. Add cold weather and it gets worse, add wet weather and it is even worse. The fix is simple: 1) At least 4mm of total rear toe-in (0.25 degrees per corner). The Scuderia and 16M fixed this, but most people have never aligned or re-aligned their cars. 2) Michelin Pilot Super Sport for street use. Pirelli Trofeo, Hoosier R6/A6, Pirelli Ferrari Challenge slicks for track use. It saddens me deeply to read about lost lives on something avoidable. A well setup 360CS or Scuderia is a car with such high limits of grips, than even experienced drivers cannot reach those limits consistently (and I'm one of them). However, a badly setup 360CS or Scuderia is a car that will exceed the limits of grips and a medium (moderate) pace, and lose control even with all the nannies ON. A good friend lost his CS on the 1st track day, when the car snapped on him, 1st track day with the CS from many track days he has run in other cars. Keep your car in optimum conditions, and be safe.
This is very sad. The pic shows how extensive the damage. I would echo F430GT's advice in the hopes readers here can avoid accidents due to snap oversteer. Ill add that an alternative to Pilot Super Sports is Bridgestone RE-11s (for those wanting OEM 18" sizes for their "regular" 360s). Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have traveled this stretch of road many times......He was .5 of a mile into a long flat straight road with agro feilds on both sides... May he RIP
This is a salient reminder that spirited driving always has associated risks, not only for ourselves, but sometime for others on the road. Please be careful! R.I.P.
Poster F430GT wrote a good piece articling possible reasons for this crash. But this was on a straight away, so wouldn't be unlikely snap or liftoff oversteer would have been the cause? Something caused the driver to attempt to change direction beyond the capacity of one or more components of the vehicle. Perhaps swerve to avoid an animal?
Shane. I have driven that stretch quite a bit as well. PCH from just below Oxnard to malibu is just beautiful. I always thought how ironic the Pt. Mugu section is that the military would choose one of the most beautiful areas in the counry for practice bombing ranges.
Same thoughts here. Driver has been identified as Mahalingam Shrinivas. RIP. http://www.vcstar.com/news/2013/jan/06/driver-in-fatal-ferrari-crash-identified/
