Awesome! (I swear that looks like right out my back door on 280?)

If you are near the SF peninsula, lets put three of them together next time?

    Nice rides, gentlemen!

I believe Freshmeat can give a suggestion about a mic. Check out the link.

I do, but also SF too (and another state or two). The CS is currently in SF though...I didn't realize there were so many here! Would be fun to have a larger gathering of CS's here (although mine will only be here for another month or two perhaps).

I think the main issue for an external mic is position. You need to get it out of direct wind. Somewhere around the back of the car (number plate area) is pretty good. I think pretty much any "cheapo" mic works well there.

The cars look great in the video / stills. Nice one!

Yes, I've done recordings before for motorsports and the way to get the sound right is to have cameras for video, and a mic somewhere near the exhaust to capture all the pops and burbles, then you mix them into the final cut. Thats how they make really nice motorsport vids. Else you'll have craploads of wind noise.

Thanks guys. We both live on the peninsula and are active drivers. The little jaunt was a stretch of 280 from Hillsborough to Woodside. Yes, let's definitely get the CSs together!

Here are the twins on another run last year

Nice videos! But I agree the sound could be better (less windnoise...)

What you need to do is place the camera very close to the exhaust (not much wind there). For this video, I have placed a Contour+ camera in the front and a Gopro2 near the exhaust, and used the rear camera (Gopro2) as sound source. So I'm not using external mics here at all. It's my friend's 360 F1 on a track. Sounds pretty sick!

This video of my CS is using the same setup (Contour+ in the front, GoPro2 in the rear and using the Gopro2 sound source only).

Or buy a special Gopro deadcat/microphone like mikegr posted but I haven't tried that yet...

Thanks for the tips guys :) Sounds like the dead cat mic may only be good up to 35mph. Will try the dual camera set up with one by the exhaust next time out.

I couldn't locate an external mic in time so I made a makeshift dead cat from some fluffy material pulled from a boa scarf, mounted it to a cardboard cut out, and used double sided tape to stick it to the back of the GoPro housing. It doesn't work well when the camera is fully exposed to oncoming wind but it does reduce wind noise at low speeds or when the camera is attached to the rear bumper as Mike Law suggested.

This video uses the homemade deadcat and GoPro mounted to the CS rear bumper. It captures about half the cars present so you can't see all 3 CSs. Good to have you SCEye!
