I ran the car with the obd2 scanning and found a couple interesting things. First, on the "fuel sys" reading one says open and the other says close as in the pic below. I'm assuming this means bank 1 is running in open loop and bank 2 in closed which would make sense if this is correct.

Secondly, the voltage on the b1s1 never changes from .435 whereas the b2s1 fluctuates while at idle and while driving. You can see that in this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuBfR2hRW7c

I sprayed some wd40 on the connectors to see if it would pick up a connection this way and it didn't change anything. Seems weird that I can get a consistent reading when using the multimeter but it doesn't work when connected to the new o2 sensor...

remember you are not reading actual data on a scan tool but interpreted data. you can unplug the o2 sensors and many other sensors and the scan tool will read the value it is using to run the car (substituted value) If the Motronic is not getting correct values it will display a fixed voltage on the scan tool. To properly diagnose you will need to be checking voltages with a meter or lab scope preferably with a break out box at the motronic unit. I suspect you will be running into fuel trim and O2 sensor errors until someone very familiar with the operation of the Motronic 5.2 gets involved.

catalysts will not cause the O2 sensor codes. Wiring, fuses or sensors will. check the harness where it goes through the firewall, common area for damage. Last but not least throttle ballance that is off a significant amount may also cause some issues with O2 sensor error for lack of switching, ussually accompanied with fuel trim errors.

I called Dave Helms today and spoke with him regarding this issue. Of course, he strongly recommended the gold connector kit before doing anything else. So, I have the kit coming in tomorrow morning and will be installing these lone connectors first to see if that fixes the issue. Will report back if this solves this, if not, she's off to the dealer in two weeks.

Ok, car went in to dealer today to resolve this issue and I may have earned the final Darwin Award of 2012 on fchat if this is right.

I thought bank 1 was the driver side cylinders. I thought I read that on here but may have gone lysdexic. They're saying when they swap the o2 sensors the codes swap sides which is a positive thing and makes perfect sense if I've been a complete idiot and been working on the wrong side of the f-ing car this whole time.

So, someone please confirm my ignorance that Bank 1 is in fact on the PASSENGER side for whatever reason and I will humbly accept my award.

Bank 1-4 is indeed on the passenger side (left hand drive) of the engine.

The cylinders are numbered as such:

    ^front of car^
    ___________
    |( 8 )| |( 1 )|
    |( 7 )| |( 2 )|
    |( 6 )| |( 3 )|
    |( 5 )| |( 4 )|

Oh no, that ... hurts. Ernie is right, bank 1 is the passenger side (for us left hand siders).

All is well. Got her back from the dealer and there are no more codes! I have a completely healthy 355!! Anyone want to buy her?! Being at the dealer got me leaning toward a 458!!

I was working on the wrong O2 sensor, Bank 1 on the 355 is the passenger side for future reference!
