355 prices are going...

This goes along with what I posted earlier in this thread. I agree with this post 100%. But what do I know as a 355 owners who is obsessed with the car, reads everything possible about it, dreams about the 355, maintains it myself and wants to help any prosepective owner have a clear idea of what 355 ownership is like.

I must add though that if you can wrench you will slash the cost of ownership by 75-90%. I love working on my 355. The car is amazing in so many ways and only becomes more so the more I learn and work on it.

 

This is so true. The more I tinker with it, the more I appreciate how fantastic a car it is. People can malign it all they want but its proper race car technology in a road going package. Little things like the ducting to the front rotors and the heat shields on the tie rod ends; you don't see these things on other cars.

 

Functional FULL underbody areo kit that produces downforce is one of my favorite features.

 

Sounds like I am not alone with my addiction... I think about my 355 all day, always modifying something always thinking about what I will do to her next.

Ferrari might be taking over my life. Maybe I’ll get a Cavallino tattooed on my back.

My 355 just went down $45 in value, filled it up today

 

LOL.....if you don't drive it and keep that tank full then it actually goes up $45 in value

 

Does anybody think the F355 will drop to 348 levels in the next year or so?

The way I see it now 348s go for $35 - 50K with the F355 going between $50 - 65K.

I am definitely looking for a F355 in my future but if it looks like it has not bottomed out I'd rather wait (storing it and getting good use out of it is a little challenging now but can be done).

No and that is already showing in the fact that 355 prices are heading up just a tick in the last year.

 

It will depend on the economy, if it keeps slowly improving, the value of the 355 will head in the same direction. I bought a little over a year ago and prices have moved up slightly (couple of thousand), but I think it's due to slight economic recovery more than anything. I don't think you'll see much movement one way or the other over the next year, so not much point in waiting unless you need to save a little more money to do so.

 

What I find interesting is 512TR prices. I sold that car absolutely out of fear of a transaxle failure, which is very real and painfully expensive. Here is a car with the most expensive engine out service of any non-supercar Ferrari, with a true Achilles heel (gearbox) and no one cares a lick!

There's just no predicting it.

512TR - diff carrier splits and takes out the case with it. There are a couple of options to fix it, though, so if it was a big concern it could just be taken care of at the next major and no longer be an issue. I wouldn't sell the car over it.

 

I think he's saying 512TR prices are going up, and no one cares about its issues.

 

What other car do we know of that has a possible problem that can be fixed for similar money at the next major? And valve guides don't detonate in an intersection leaving you searching for a $25,000 part.

My point is that everyone loves the 355, but they have a reputation for being expensive to maintain, and that is probably the biggest thing driving the downturn in the price.

The 512TR is at its best MORE expensive to maintain, has the potential to literally dump tens of thousands of dollars of parts onto the road, and the prices are steadily climbing. I will admit it is the last of the mid-engine V12s, and I really love the cars, but the logic defies my understanding.

 

In my 9 months of experience with a 355 price is far less important than condition. Don't sweat $5k this way or that. If you find one with good service history and the major known problems taken care of buy it.

The diff can be bought complete with all gears installed from Ricambi at $3k. I just bought the quill shaft, the other weak link, for $2k from Modena Engineering in Australia. The diff used to be a 25k part but no longer. I plan to get these installed at the next major. I'll have it addressed prior to any split failure. Once done, the car will be well sorted. My fuse panel is good too.

The 512TR is a rare car, just 408 imported, a few no longer running. For me it's the large engine and drop dead good looks. It helps me to compensate for the lack of femine curves I wasn't born with. I understand the increase in value regardless of issues.

There are documented 25k services on 355's which some have said were unexpected. I remember a post titled, How much maintenance is too much?, about a 355 with over 90k worth of services selling for 45k.

Understanding how beautiful a 355 is and how wonderful it sounds, I know many are willing to take the chance for the same reasons that I accept my chances.

I did not buy a Ferrari to save money. So comparing this model over that one based on service cost is contrary to my desire to own one.

 

You don't have to rub it in, as when I sold mine this was not the case!

The 355 and the 512TR are my 2 favorites. God I love the 512. It's the perfect blend of old and new, and the sound is the best V12 I have heard in any car. I wish I could have both, so I didn't always want the other!

 

Mine too (outside of some of the '60's cars), trying to decide between the two when it was time to buy was difficult!

 

The 355 and 512TR are my two favorites also. I will give the slight edge in looks to the 355 but they are both beautiful. Ford GT or GT40 is right up there also.

 

I got mine on June 2012. A 98 GTB F1 with Tubi and Challenge grill. 30k miles have majors done.

I know last month a 97 GTB manual was sold by a friend , similar miles like me and not sure if the majors are done, sold %8 above the price that i bought.

And 355 prices here are more than 360's. Same thing happened to 993 porsche car as well.

I know one things or two on F355s and the questions one can ask about the model are so many... Which one is better? The 2.7 or 5.2? Manual or F1? GTB, GTS or Spider? Classic Rosso Corsa or a fancy Blue Pozzi?

Well, I simply think the F355 is one of those instant classics. Collectors will probably never value too much a car which was made in 10k + numbers, but the F355 to me is like the Porsche 993. The best of old school low tech F-cars.

Price wise I honestly think they will outprice 360s and will match F430s. The 360 is a fab car, easier to mantain and I think it looks better than a 430. But, performances are hugely inferior to the F430. Performance wise, F355s are of course way beyond F430s, but they are not too distant from 360s.

So, IMHO, an F355 have the look, that old school feeling on her side and it does not feel to much slower than a 360. It is also rarer (ok, it is bit of a joke to say this for a car who was made in 10k+ number) than a 360 or 430.

Having had a F355 manual Spider, I would probably go for a GTS manual. Less troubles with soft top and it is the last GTS made and I just love the manual.

Nonetheless, I think that the F1 on the F355 was not too bad at all. I only drove it once and not for long, but the thing I liked the most (compared to the F1 of my F430 spider I had at the time) was the throttle control. That F355 F1 did feel different. I mean the F1 on the F430 was superior across the board, but the one of the F355 seemed "more human". I mean it really felt like a manual with no stick and clutch pedal where you are still in control! Biggest downside of F1 on F355s IMHO is that F1 lever which looks awful in the center console and the fact that you loose the oil temp gauge.

 

Just throwing it out there for market sake, but i just bought a 96 spider with 17k miles. Full major service 15k dollar service just performed, all issues take care of including shocks rebuilt, headers, and valve guides. Car has aftermarket exhaust but all else stock. Cosmetically very nice.
