991 GT3: PDK or Manual?

Possibly neither. Porsche has already said the Turbo will get the ZF 7M and 7PDK because it is based on a new engine, smaller than the GT1/GT2/GT3 engine. The GT2 will not get the larger transmission because the chassis does not have room for both the larger engine and larger transmission. The same constraint may carry over to the GT3.

 

Hopefully because compared to the old 6 speed GT3 the shift on the 7m 991 GT sucks.

 

I think you may be right with this. I see a 997.2 GT3 in my future ....
I still haven't heard confirmation on the OP's original question, any more news lately?

 

I am guessing, speculating that porche wouldl like to just do a PDK which simplifies their life.
But in USA as BMW found out there are still enough real enthusiasts to demand and justify a manual. We aslo know a pure MT will be measurably lighter.

As an aside my local ferrari dealer says a used 430 with manual is worth 15k more.

 

What? The 7mt in my 991C2s is one of the best shifting mt I have ever used.

 

Unfortunately, BMW people have made clear that the current manual M5 will be the last manual M5 (evo.)

 

With a deposit down on the new GT3RS I find it a bit odd we(I) dont even seem to know what the transmission choices will be one year into the new 911 series.
MY GUESS IS THAT IT WILL BE PDK ONLY, but no one even at the dealership can confirm that is right.
With the size of the 911 growing (although lighter ) and the RS now rumored to be 2015 I'm tempted to redirect the deposit towards the new 919 or 961 (whatever they call it) mid engined tech lite version of the 918 spyder which is also rumored to be a 2015 model year intro.
In the meanwhile the GT3 997.1 delivers at least 1 smile/lap and keeps me alert and interested at all times.

 

i've heard from a very reliable source, the porsche country importer that the GT3 will be PDK only while the RS will carry on with a manual tranny. of course, that remains to be seen. but never has he been mistaken on info like this.

 

I'd be very surprised if it were only available in PDK. I mean, they offer the standard 991 carrera with a proper 7-speed manual. Hell, even the Cayenne is offered with a 6-speed.

 

Your reliable source says PDK or manual choice? 6M or 7M? very interested in knowing.

 

The new 5 series is very nice, but it's become much more of a luxury car. I can kind of see the logic in not offering a traditional three-pedal setup.

At this point, it's kind of catering to the buyer who wants less performance, worse fuel economy and less convenience. A dwindling group.

 

Since you put it that way......hard to argue. That dwindling group would hang on to the "fun" and "skill" factors associated with manually rowing at speed.

Now that I think about it, has porsche ever produced at GT series car offering multiple gearboxes?

If manual, 7sp 90%, 6sp 10%. Don't know if the new 7sp gearbox is beefy enough for the GT cars, but I would have to think they have that figured out-----unless there is no Manual offered. Is the 7spM slated for the soon to be turbo?

 

That begs the question then, what other Mt have you used. A great MT will feel like a fine gun, a rifle bolt action. The 7mt feels like a glock, It works just fine as a relaible appliance, but there is little mechanical joy in its action. If a sports car is as mauch about experience as raw numbers, then the 991 destroys some key componants of the 911 experience for some gain in performance.

The journalists I like all feel that the old 6 in the 981 is a better shifter than the 7 in the 991.

 

Just got the call from the dealer re my deposit--The GT3 will be summer/fall and PDK only. GT3RS to follow (he estimated 3-6 mo. later and guessing PDK only).

I drove a 2009 Carrera S equipped with PDK back in early 2009 and loved the performance of the PDK but I would still opt for the manual.

This does not make sense...Why would Porsche only offer the PDK transmission in a track oriented car but OTOH offer a manual as an option in its street/everyday 911s?

 

Interesting...I have never heard this argument made about any 911 before...HAHA
