The "engine rattle" could just be the bypass valve but I'm sure we all highly doubt it!!

Boy, if you know anything about engines and transmissions, and their noises, this may be a great opportunity to score a deal! Is the vehicle available for inspection?
Would I ever love to be there with a pocket full of cash hoping all the rest of you stayed home saying "yeah, probably a POS"? You bet!

They don't even tell you where the car is so you can go look at it. Totally blind auction. What a crap shoot!

Didn't someone just post that car in a CL ad from Foreign Cars Italia? It could be a coincidence, but two 355 Spyders the same color for sale in NC?

Edit: Oops, it was a GTS, but in the same color.

Actually they give you a map to the site if you click on the address. Its about a 6 hour drive for me up there, but if anyone is serious, I could make the trip up for expenses and small consideration and give it an inspection. I doubt I could do anything close to a PPI, but I could listen to it run, try to zero in on the rattle and get some better photos. PM me if you are interested.

Could be the flywheel rattling. It's about 3 hours from me, but I have no interest in a 2nd one. I'd take a ride down with somebody if they wanted to check it out, though.

Is that a black interior? Ugh

You have to contact the seller. It says one day inspection only no driving and that day was 1/17.

Too late as the inspection date was Jan 17th and the last day to register was Jan 25th.

Assuming that the car was not kept up to date (due for a major, had sticky issues, needed a clutch, etc.) and had the typical issues of a 1999 355, what would be a guess of the cost to bring it back to a well kept car?

IRS does not give things away anymore. They have it set up when you are all said and done with it, you realize you just shot yourself in the foot. I purched a 2001 996 Turbo, great car, second gear syncro issues :) They do their market research and although the liability owed to the Government is less than the value of the car, I think they still try to push the prices up.
Example; If the auction is suppose to be over at 12:00 sharp and someone bids a penny at 11:51, the auction gets extended another 10-15 minutes. This is how it is in most cases. Please verify to be sure. This keeps going on until people stop bidding and then you see how much you paid for it. As it sits at the minimum reserve, I believe its too much for a car not inspected and they mention that it is in average condition. I'll bet you its below averege when we inspect it.

    Hope I helped some

Most of these POS sold at this type of auction are not worth it. You could spend 30gs on a car like that and it will never ever look like a "well kept car" and it is very likely one will spend more than 30gs.

Not sure I'd even consider this car if it was discounted by 50%....they're way off base with that price.

Mine was sort of neglected but had 13k miles and I spent 30k bringing it back to life and fixing all the 355 issues (including a repaint color change, dash redone, sticky fixed, headers changed, windshield, major) so this one could cost 40k to bring back to glory which means you'd have to pay 10k or under to make it worthwhile.

Perhaps they'd be better off selling off the parts, they would get a lot more money out of it.
