This is one of the most fantastic atomotive short stories I have ever read. In fact, I have read it many times. There is only one Peter Egan! Please enjoy.

That's a great story ! Thanks for posting.

In 1969, I have 2 buddies that managed a teen dance place called the Studio Club in Dallas. It was owned by Larry Lavine, who was married to Carroll Shelby's daugthter. Larry had a 427 Cobra that he had not been taking good care of, and Shelby wanted it brought to the shop in LA. My 2 friends were hired to drive it out there. Of course we all wanted rides before they headed out there. If my memory seves me correctly, it was an automatic, and first gear wasn't working. They told some amazing stories when they got back. Drove it down the Strip in Vegas. Made it through the desert at night.
    Never saw that Cobra again.

Larry went on to start several new restaurants in Dallas, including the original Chili's.
He later teamed with Norman Brinker of Steak and Ale fame, and built a huge restaurant conglomerate through the years.

If you liked the story, be sure to look at Egan's other work. He has many stories like that. I have read everything he has ever written.

Am I the only one whose page ends with:

    " Silence.

"Just kidding. I can be there in about 15 minutes." "

There is more to this story, right?
