A mandatory minimum sentence is a minimum number of years, typically 5- or 10-years in prison, that must be served when a person is convicted of a particular crime. Mandatory minimum sentences for drug crimes are based on the amount of drugs involved. Different drugs have different set quantities that trigger a specific minimum sentence.

The idea behind mandatory minimum sentences was to encourage the government to prosecute high level drug offenders. However, the amounts that can trigger a substantial sentence are often lower than those a high level trafficker would be dealing in. For example, a drug offender could receive five years in federal prison for selling as little as five grams of crack cocaine. Five grams might be only 25 doses of crack, depending on purity, worth a few hundred dollars. This is not what high level traffickers are involved in. Most drug cases involve low level offenders. In a report issued in 1995, the U.S. Sentencing Commission found that only 11% of federal drug trafficking defendants were major traffickers. More than half were low level offenders.

    Incarceration Trends in America
•From 1980 to 2008, the number of people incarcerated in America quadrupled-from roughly 500,000 to 2.3 million people
•Today, the US is 5% of the World population and has 25% of world prisoners.
•Combining the number of people in prison and jail with those under parole or probation supervision, 1 in ever y 31 adults, or 3.2 percent of the population is under some form of correctional control

Dear God are you prone to hyperbole.

there are not shanty towns surrounding every city in the USA..

Toronto has 67,000 families on the social housing waiting list. Let's call them under housed.

    Toronto has 5,000+ homeless.

I dunno, seems to me you could fill your van with homeless people if you tried.

Again, toss a few wild ass remarks out there, with no basis in fact.

I can drive about a 30 mile radius of my home and I'm sure I'll find some homeless people. Not in the suburbs where I live, but certainly within the Philadelphia city limits.

And Philly makes a big effort on the homeless. But some won't go to shelters, some can't afford "affordable housing" (the PC term for public housing) and others get lost in the system. At least I'm not stupid enough to think there are no homeless in my city.

Canada is an oasis of perfection? A paradise, eh? Then why do so many Canadians leave their country for the USA? Twice as many as Americans that head north.

Seems to me you've got a pretty serious inferiority complex. You mask it in bravado, but really, you just don't have much to brag about as Canadians, do you? WAIT, you do have hockey and Canadian Football. Oh, and a couple good skiers.

And don't get me wrong, I'm no jingoistic American. I don't wave a flag and say my country right or wrong, but I think all this noise about the U.S. here masks some pretty simple jealousy.

Don't know for sure, but maybe you've earned that complex.

Seems we get on very well with our Kiwi neighbours compared to other places :p

I'd LIVE in Canada any day but not the US, I enjoy visiting the US but the availability to guns by nutters and the sheer numbers of both nutters and guns is too high to want to live there

I'm not sure what you're trying to point out there. I'll take your word that's from somewhere in the US. The picture shows a mobile home park, probably in winter, as there are no leaves or grass. The waste bins are out and lined up ready for pickup. The asphalt is a bit rough, again perhaps due to being in a region with winter climate. Generally these parks have low-cost housing, probably running in the range of US$20-100K, and fill a housing niche for low-income families or retirees.

A search of Toronto Ontario shows numerous mobile home parks in the region. Such as this overhead:

Wikimapia - Let's describe the whole world!

    Or this directory page:

Mobile Home Parks in Toronto ON | YellowPages.ca?

I would expect the mobile home parks in Toronto Ontario fill the same niche as the US and and are roughly similar in style and range of upkeep.

Yes your right and the majority of them are second homes near lakes, ski resorts, golf courses ect. They actually have lawns, pavement, parks and the majority are not on govt assistance. They are "real" trailer parks and not delapidated rusted out old trailers. I was down in Florida a few weeks ago and dropped by Blackhorse motorsports to check out some of the Ferraris they have online for sale. They are in Port Richie, and on the way home I took the side roads north and could not believe the squallor that hundreds were living in. It was middle day and I wouldnt have stopped to have a piss in that area. On the way down the veterans hwy to get to the Tampa airport I notice everytime on the west side of the hwy hundreds of families living in plywood box type homes beside a junkyard. Ive been to Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta and I am appauled at the way Americas poor lives.

I used to like watching Piers on CNN but he has gone hog wild on the gun issue. He loves telling his guests whom are mostly pro gun/ NRA to "answer the question please" but whenever he gets asked a question, he quickly retorts with another question. He is a arrogant arse.

Well lets just say that ive seen lots of both sides of the fence and you can keep yours. Americans are being manipulated into doing exactly what your handlers want. We here in Canada have not gotten that bad yet and I hope we dont. Cant blame Americans for wanting to keep there guns as your bill of rights is now dead. Americas middle class is almost gone, the bill of rights has been destroyed as any american can be detained or sent to Gitmo for no reason and now America has passed a bill that gives govt authority to kill anyone without just cause. You may think this is great. I dont, and I feel sorry for you guys if you dont start a revoloution soon. I knew things in America were going bad but I never thought it would happen this fast.

Refer back to China in 1989 to the Tiananmen Square Massacre as troops with assault rifles and tanks inflicted thousands of casualties on unarmed civilians trying to block the military’s advance on Tiananmen Square in the heart of Beijing, which student demonstrators had occupied for seven weeks. Our 2nd amendment is designed to keep the general population armed to protect themselves from a government when necessary. Note that assault rifles were used against unarmed citizens.

That's a pretty crazy example to bring up.

The Chinese govt would have been even more brutal if the students had been armed !!

just FYI Kai, China is not a democracy, it is a dictatorship by a committee of old men, people there don't get to vote who governs them.

If you live in a democracy, you don't need guns to protect your freedom, just a ballot box every 3 or 4 years.

What exactly makes you think that the USA is a democracy? It does not matter who Americans vote for...both candidates are choosen to make them feel like they got what they wanted. They dont get what they want. They get what the men in the shadows pick for them and the sooner they realize what is really going on, the sooner they can start their revolt. If I lived in the US there would be no way they would get my guns from me. The men in the shadows are already grooming the next emperor to be. Many Americans know deep down inside that something is really wrong but the thought of whats happening is so scary that they cant bring themselves to see it. The world is changing in a bad way as the poison that is happening in America will spread if we allow it to. The seeds have already been planted everywhere.

Gerry, we're losing you man, you need to throttle back a little, you're beginning to sound like you believe in conspiracies and aliens.

I like you but you need to move away from the border with the US , just a little mate :)
