I been researching some of the period correct colors from 1958-1959, specifically blue colors. I found this beautiful 250 PF Coupe in Blu Genziana. The car won it's class at Pebble some years ago. Does any one have any more pictures of this car or other vintage Ferraris in the same color? I already have the PF Coupe Special that recently sold (attached), hoping to get a few more examples.

    Thank you,

    Geno

Geno, after all of these years, I still don't have a clear idea of what this color looked like originally, but I am fairly certain that it was never the green that you see on that PF Coupe.

4.9 Superfast s/n 0719SA is an example of a car that was originally painted in blu genziana (Max Meyer 16229). The first image below is from the September 1958 issue of Sports Cars Illustrated (scanned from my original copy), showing the original paint. Unfortunately, the exact color is no longer clear. However, take a look at the second image below, taken around the same time. I have seen this car in person several times, and in several different shades. In fact, the "original" color has been interpreted in at least three different ways by different owners/restorers on this single car. It appears to become greener with each restoration. I have included some additional images to illustrate.

For other Ferraris that were painted blu genziana in-period, see 410 Superamerica s/n 1015 SA and 250 GTO s/n 3387 GT.

By the way, the flower that inspires this color name grows in several shades of blue - none of which would ever be described as "green."

In fact they shade toward the blue violet / purple rather than trending green. These cars are becoming almost emerald....

It is. Even looks good when it's shiny. :)

Thanks for the great color shot! I have this one in B&W only. I also have a B&W shot taken at the same time from the front; do you have that one in color as well?

I also have somewhat early B&W images of 0719SA from the side and rear, taken when the car was sitting on grass in a park. The glare on the side image is such that it's difficult to tell for sure that the insert is not the same color as the car, though it does appear more likely to be chromed or silver than not.

The question, of course, is when were each of these photos taken? Prior to the addition of SF shields and grille-mounted bumper savers, or after? I'm convinced that, by the time of the SCI cover shot and the images I posted below, the inserts are painted blue. Of course, this could have been a modification made by prior to the photos taken in 1958.

In that amazing photo archive of yours, do you have a good shot of 0719SA on the PF stand at Turin in '57? How about official PF images? Unfortunately, I have neither.

Thanks. Unfortunately, not entirely conclusive. The recessed area does appear to be lighter than the rest of the car (one would expect the opposite if it were panted the same color), but then compare it to these other images in B&W and see which it most resembles.

Also, notice that the cream colored seats found in your later photo do not match the darker seats when shown in Turin.

Thanks for the contemporary street scene. We forget that back in the day "exotic" cars were truly exotic compared to what most folks drove.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread. Sorry for the detour.

Getting back on the subject of helping our firend with a color for his new car...

Geno, Symbolic Motors had a car that showed very nicely in this color blue, but don't know if it is a period color or just made up.

When someone gets close that gadget gently applies the compressor trumpets to suggest that it might be enough. I have often wondered if that thing will actually increase the damage when the little lady parking the Buick Electra floors the gas pedal at the TRUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, at least the horns will alarm you to go and get her before she runs away...
