US Model 8X$79=a lot

 

$79 for a set if I remember correctly.

 

I called and they wanted $79 each!!

 

Ask Alberto to make some and lots of people will buy em!

 

This is a re-post I made about the grommets:

Don Rudd gave me some he made playing around casting a rubber-like compound while at T Rutands years ago. I didn't think much of it at the time but when I finally put them on the car they were fantastic. Tight fit, proper look and seemed very durable. May have been a polyurethane product or similar. Search Google/Youtube for casting plastic, rubber and maybe urethanes. The casting process seemed pretty easy and there are various compound for different levels of hardness.
This seems like a job for Verell!

 

If the grommets go over the tubes extending from the body my paint guy measured them at 1 1/4 inches. This is a US spec model. Did he measure incorrectly?

I tried rubber grommets split in half. The correct size is ID 1 1/16 inch. An inexpensive alternative, 50 cents each versus $79 each at Berlinnetta Motors or $20 each at PR Products. You be the judge. The last photo are originals.

$ 20 each is peanuts in the scheme of things. i vote to spend the $20 each. what is that total. $160? cheap compared to the labor to remove bumpers and install if done at a later date. sorry, jmho.

I will say the grommets actually fit much better as they are more pliable and a snugger fit. Let's see what others have to say.

I would toss this project to Verell and see what he has to say. $79 a grommet is far beyond reason to me. $79 a set is not so bad. That bumper grommet seems to me a very easy piece to cast.

 

GOOD NEWS: I'm sure I could make them, would need at least one in very good condition for a mold pattern, as the reproductions would exactly duplicate every detail of the pattern. They would be made of chemical & uv resistant polyurethane.

To get the cost down as much as possible I would have to make a mold from the original, then make 7 more pieces to make an 8 part mold. I need to know the weight to get a good price estimate, but most likely we'd be talking $120 - $160 for a set of eight. A lot would depend on the yield. Another cost factor would be the yield. Depending on a part's shape, it can be hard to avoid getting a small surface bubble or 2.

Some pictures of the part by itself would be a big help.

BAD NEWS: I'm still badly backlogged on promised molds, including the door pocket mold, and have almost a 4 month queue of column switches to be restored, so it would be several months before I could possibly start on one.

 

This is just an fyi...I have not acquired these (NA for my Euro M-series).

Thought I would post a few photos of the bumper mount grommets Don Rudd made a good while ago. I believe he cast them from originals. They are a tad shiny but that's not hard to fix. They do seem to seal up to the bodywork nicely. I've had these on the car for six months or more and they show no sign of splitting. The one in the middle of the three is an original one.

Racerboy, do you know what colour that green is ?

 

The color is verde medio metallizzato.

 

Where did you find them?

 

They fit the tubes with the correct inner diameter, have the correct surface curve but are hard plastic so do not contour to the body well and are not probably the best product.

I could provide one of Don's repros that is new but you would be making a "cast of a cast"

 

Is it difficult to make a casting for soft stuff like this or are there difficulties I'm not seeing?
I may start these up myself if I can ...

 

Casting is not hard, designing & making a mold that will produce multiple ones without bubbles is. The mold is silicone. Once mixed you pull a vacuum on it to eliminate mixing bubbles, then pour the silicone over the pattern & cure it under 40psi pressure overnight. I use modified medical autoclaves

When casting a part, you also have to cure the filled mold under 40 psi to ensure a void free result.

I lost one
