This is a quote from BIG RED "It's only a gt/4 for god sakes, not like you saved a 275" So all you 3x8 owners tell me how you feel about that . Is your Passion any less than a 275 owner, is you car worth a restoration or any thing that you like to do with it, do you feel any less of a Ferrari owner. I bet you driver you cars more ..... I would like to see what you have to say
Being a die hard GT4 owner I really have a passion for these cars, however, I can certainly say our cars aren't in the same league as 275's. No we may not be any less Ferrari enthusiasts, I don't think that was what Red was alluding to, but he was saying and I think we can all agree that even the 1st GT4 will not see 6 figures, at least not in our collecting life time. I dare to say allot of GT4's are bought due to the low entry cost even when compared to other 308's. I can't speak for Red, and I'm not goin to try to but he is a Ferrari guy through and through and has been here for a long long time. He has seen a lot of owners come and go seen the same arguments over and over. He knows a lot of what he speaks of where people should and shouldn't put their money when buying a car or which one to restore. Anything being said here now has been said before, its nothing new. In the end a GT4 maybe one of the most fun Ferraris to drive and one of the best handling ever built, but lets not try and pretend that they are anything more than what they are, entry level Ferraris, but a step above the 246's
I think Big Red was pulling your leg and stirring the pot. GT4 owners are dedicated and passionate about them, and I don't know if you'll find a group of owners here as crazy as we are. The GT4: You either love it or hate it. No one is on the fence here.
Everybody has something that they are in to. I love both the 275 and the 308 (and gt4) and was lucky enough to grow up with both cars in my family's garage. Sure one is worth way more and is more highly regarded in the world of collectables. I could say "yeah my gt4 is way better then your yugo" and have a ton of yugo guys on my case over it. Why can't we just respect each others tastes. Sure tr's, mondials, 308, gt4s - whatever might get fun of. But we love 'em. Great for this guy for being short minded. I bet he likes Porsches.
You would be hard pressed to even find a "Yugo Guy", let alone one that would argue with you! In fact, yugochat.com is available! http://www.hugedomains.com/domain_profile.cfm?d=yugochat&e=com
This GT4 was in Berlin previously, very nice example. If you think the price is a bit high, you'd be surprised to hear that another two 308 GT4 sold already for 90K/$116K each in the last months here. Both were very well restored and very original. One of the 308 GT4s which have been sold: http://www.mariobernardi.de/mario-be...tail/index.htm
Fair point, I stand corrected. Hey I'm one of those who push for our cars to be recognized around here and do get frustrated at what prices they do get in the average market. As I've been saying when an Alfa gets 40k at auction and a GT4 can barely get 33k its time to put the paper bag on. But I stand by my main point.
Al why did you buy a Sandy Salvaged Gt4? Were you just buying a Euro on the Cheap? Did you know it was # 1? Will you be restoring it? PS: Ball Busting is a national pass-time in Canada
Well I saved a pristine low mileage Barn Find GT4- and spent far too much and it took far too long and I love it to death. But it's only a Gt4... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I first looked a 308GT4, years before starting my 308GTB ownership. It's widely accepted it's a better handling car, of the two models. The styling will have it's day, IMO. It's certainly a Ferrari....I think he was joshing...
If you put a GT4 next to an X1/9 you have a perfect snap shot of cutting edge Italian design, of the period.. Things were in transition, from the Pininfarina shapes of the 70s, into "something new"... Leaving lines like this behind..... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Can't compare Pininfarina to Bertone. Different design concepts. Frankly, I like the Fiat and Alfa Pininfarina runabouts. But then again, I think the Volvo Bertone cars look kinda cool, too (for a Volvo, anyway). Now, if they all weren't heaping rustbuckets.....
Can't we all just get along???? Love my GT4. It is a ferrari through and through. It's got the engine, its got the chassis/body, it's got the screwey electronic wiring. It makes the right noises, and it looks pretty damn good out in the wild. Remember, there are people who think it is crazy to spend more than $25k on a car, any car, much less hundreds of thousands on a Ferrari (or $20k for an almost 40 year old car). To them, there is no difference between that Camry and a Ferrari, save the price. They will both get you from point A to point B. So, enjoy what you have, and don't worry about what others think. You bought the car for a reason.
I've always liked the GT4. I cringe when Clarkson repeatedly says "it's not a Ferrari". He can pi** off.
I am also pretty sure Big Red was just pulling your leg. As for the value of the 308GT4. I love the car, and if I had an opportunity to buy the first example I would have snatched it up, regardless of condition, because of its historical significance both to Ferrari and to the GT4 itself. As the cliche goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Moreover, a car's merit and value is entirely subjective. The monetary value of a car is entirely dependent on the whim of the herd... The more sheep that go in one direction, the higher the car's value. Similarly worthless are the opinions of automotive experts. Their 15 minutes with a car syphoned through their preconceived notions, proclivities and bias do not translate to anything of merit in my experience. Some of my favorite cars were hated by the press...The Lancia Zagato and Mercedes R class are two that spring to mind. In fact, my favorite drive is the Countach, and you will never find any "expert" who thinks that car drives well! My opinion is no less relevant than Car & Driver's...in fact, its more relevant---because I am the one spending the damn money! I say all this to say... how on earth can any of you debate whether or not a 308GT4 is in the same league as a 275? What is the measuring stick? If we are talking historical relevance to the Marque, a strong argument can be made that the 275 is more important...if we are talking monetary value, right now I think it is clear... But if you cast all that aside... put both cars in a vacuum, which car would you rather own? Bertone's lines may alienate some, but others are drawn too it it. The wheelbase, packaging and unfrickingbelievable handling must be experienced to be believed. Most people who don't like the GT4 have never spent any time with one. I had the opportunity to drive one on some great backroads a few months back. I was driving downhill approaching a sharp bend when the brakes failed (maintenance related issue). The car's handling and predictability saved my butt, where in most any other Ferrari, I would have ended up on Jalopnik. I'll tell you what. Of all the Ferraris ever made, the Testarossa among my favorites... the mondial is not too far behind... Whether Mr. Sheehan or anyone else agrees with me is of no concern and it shouldn't be of yours. You guys who own GT4's, you don't need to justify your purchase. The car can stand on its own. Just my .02
