I've lived in Austin for nearly 12 years. I'm not from Texas originally... but at this point I wouldn't leave Austin. Great place.

Populace generally has a good vibe, it's progressive in thinking, great place to be for singles and families. Populace tends to be more educated than average and healthier than average.

Hot women everywhere... not that I notice (married).

Drawbacks.... not a hub airport, no pro sports.

    Plenty of Ferrari owners.

Everytime I visit Austin I make new friends and see some I have not seen in years. :)

Also, is there plenty of places to open up our cars safely? About 30 minutes from central Austin there are literally dozens of roads that are almost unpatrolled.

What's the top speed limit there on your highways? 65 in cities, 70 FM roads, 80 rural interstates.

I'm excited about moving. I just sold my place today and plan on relocating in the next several weeks. Be prepaired for liking wintertime a lot better than summer time.

Is Round Rock a good area? In my opinion, no.

    I agree.

Round Rock has its nice spots but I would never move there. If you're looking for a nice home in the burb's I would suggest the Cedar Park area.

    why not Round Rock?

    another question:
I'm seriously considering moving to Austin.
    Been looking at RE online.
From where I live (near northern burbs of Chicago), it seems to me that my housing costs will be HALF of where I currently live, and the property taxes will be HALF.

several have posted about the high property taxes... but, what do you consider high? I understand it is all a matter of perspective, but seems to me that Round Rock, specifically, a big 5 bd 3-4 bath 3 car garage with a pool SFH has taxes of 10-13K.

Round Rock & Hutto are pretty cheap in comparison to Austin. You can get a McMansion for the same price as a 1500 sq. ft. one story house, if not... much much less.

I work up in Round Rock, live in N. Austin. I've lived South of the River for a decade and in N. Austin for another decade. Coworkers live in RR & Hutto. I wouldn't object to RR, but it is a little out there and not "in Austin". It does have better schools. Williamson County is notorious for being picky cops - but honestly, I've never had an issue. Always polite and respectable. In others' eyes, not so much.

If you have specific questions to an area, or need a RE agent, drop me a line. Come visit. I'll take you to a BBQ place or two in the area and at least give you a lay of the land. As for RE agents, as previously noted, a friend who sold me my house is on here on a not so active account. I'll ask her to drop you a line.

Welcome to Texas ( Atx ) in advance!

+1 for Cedar Park, Balcones Country Club, and area's West.

Some fantastic roads West of Austin.

I hope you like BBQ, if not, you will very soon, as some of the very best are based in or around the Austin area.

    where abouts in "north Austin".
Not your exact address, but give me a location near.
I've only been there once.... we are coming down the last week of March to kick it around some more.... couple of job interviews, see what happens.
We are gravitating towards Round Rock because my brother and sister in law (and my 3 nephews) live there.

We want a lot of things, including to be near them so our kids can see each other a lot.
If we are a distance away, we just won't see them.... over 20 minute drive and I think it just won't happen much.

Austin and its surroundings is/are a great place to live. Lots of night life, lots of music, great restaurants and funky people.
    It is hilly, not flat.
Once you move in, the best road to have a little fun is 1431, connecting 183 (Round Rock) to Marble Falls.
It is not fast (55mph mostly) by very curvy and hilly.....gets a little crowded on weekends, with Vettes, Porsches, bikes and very few cops.
Watch for Deer at sunset and sunrise, they are everywhere!
Lots of car guys in and around Austin.
I am near Jonestown close to Round Rock on the North side of Lake Travis.
PM me whenever you want to drive around town.
I wasn't born in Texas either, but I came over as fast as I could.

I'm still working on moving to Austin. Deposit on house in Pflugerville, however, waiting to close here in CA. Sold my place twice, but, appraisal came in too low and the buyers walked.

Where are you guys taking your cars for service? I have a 430 and will need to get it serviced later in the year.

Also, how fast can one drive on 130 beyond the posted 85 limit without getting a ticket. I read recently Hennessy ran a Cad up to 220mph, of course, the road wasn't opened to the public yet.

Is a radar detector a must in TX or Austin area? I've never had a need for one here in CA.

Thanks and sorry for all the questions

Yes, radar detector is invaluable here in texas. all of my cars have valentines. As for the service, I normally use the dealer for regular service to maximize my resale value.

One of the best purchases I have ever made. They pay for themselves many times over. Particuarly because even many of the State Troopers can't afford instant on.

I disagree. A good independent will save you so much money. In Austin, I'd check out Speed Moore.

1431 is a great windy road, but in Marble Falls it was known for it's many accidents.
Watch out for blind hill crests with sudden turns, and the occasional truck crowding your lane in the opposite direction. We had a lakehouse in Marble Falls for 30+ years, and the Bluebonnet Cafe there is a great breakfast / lunch chicken fried steak spot to try. On weekends you see a ton of bikers hitting the hill country roads.

Plenty of great roads to choose from.
