Hey all! I'm looking for a nice set of wheels for my niner. Someone painted the insides of the phone dials red, and whatever they used ate the factory paint and generally looks like hell. I could have the phone dials dipped...but I don't really like them anyway. I'm having a hard time finding any 5x130 wheels that I like and that aren't ridiculously expensive. I mostly can't find anything I like, so I'm open to any and all suggestions. I'd like a more modern look if that helps, and im trying to stay below 18s. Thanks!
Personally, I love the cookie cutters for the the 944. I found a nice set that has been chromed, which is a bit different, but might be something that you would enjoy depending on your car. Porsche Rims Cookie Cutters Chromed | eBay Erik
Don't know about sizes, cost, etc, but I think 993 turbo twist wheels look great on a 944. Image Unavailable, Please Login
You know... I have a set of replica twists from a 996 TT I would sell you cheap. They have tires (pretty good ones) but are by no means new. $500 + ship in US? If interested PM me anytime. At that price you could try 'em and see what you think short or long term! I have 18's on my 944 BTW & they are jusssst right. I think there is a photo in my profile garage here.
I always liked the look of these on 944s. Or BBS. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
So far, the turbo twists and the cookie cutters are really the only ones I like. Well, I like the BBS wheels, but they are more than I want to drop with a major + tires for the 348 and other work on the 944 going on. The purist part of me really wants to restore the phone dials, honestly. I'm going to keep them, so I'll have that option. They just haven't grown on me yet. Of course, I'm having a pretty interesting custom paint job (not garish) done as we speak, so I guess I silenced the purist Thanks for the responses, guys!
Understated, fairly lightweight, and incredibly easy to clean. What's not to like? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Are they 16" phone dials? If not, try to find a set of those or some 16" fuchs. The cars look great with either of those. I found a set of 16" staggered phone dials for $300 with tires locally for our lemon/chump 944 and I like the looks.
LOL! Thanks, but just stole the image off the web to illustrate the look of the wheels. Seem to recall Porsche called that wheel the "Design 90."
I would tend to stay with the period wheels. I have several sets for my 944 race car: magnesium 15" cookie cutters (for lightest weight), Simmons 16" V5 (the originals used by most Rothmans Challenge race cars during the period), and 16" Fuchs (very period/classic). If you are interested in the Simmons or Fuchs, I may be convinced to sell them. I have several of the Simmons. These chromed wheels were on mine when I got the car. No flaws in the close up pic, just very reflective. If I were to change them the 993 turbo twist would be very tempting. The drivers door is open a bit so the fender lines look off. Good luck with the search. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for all of the replies, everyone! I decided to go with the 996tt wheels. They will go well with the other cosmetic upgrades I'm in the middle of. Can't wait to get her back and get some pics up! Purists may gasp, but hey - I havent seen a 944 quite like what I'm coming up with, and she needed some TLC anyway! The other day, I was saying to the paint and body guy that it really is too bad that most 944s have fallen into disrepair and very few people (present company excluded, of course) care to spend a little to get them in really good shape...but love it or hate it, at least this one will stand out. It's a really fun car and certainly deserves a little love!
Interested to see how it looks. I would have thought that the TT wheels would have been too wide for a 944.
