    The chemicals used can etch into the alloy causing cracks.

    If you really feel you have to go there, you can use a paint process to replicate the chrome effect. It starts with satin black undercoating and layers of silver. It's the rage for celebrity cars right now. I believe law enforcement is looking into limiting or banning the process because of the obvious reflection on other drivers.
