Klippan Seat Belts

Today at our Porsche Swap Meet in Anaheim I came across an out of place original pair of Klippan 3 point seat belts, similar as a Dino among a bunch of misc seat belts! Same as the ones I have in *03932* except grey webbing. Never know what you'll find!

Speaking of Klippan belts, my plastic cover on the shoulder belt bolt had fallen off during a drive, and when I was at home putting it back on, I looked at the bolt a little more closely, and it has "Klippan" stamped on it. Nice little detail.

 

Is there a Porsche car these would have been used on?

 

Interesting aspect, 03930, has similar mounting points, but a completely different receiver with no Klippan reference. It has a Robbins receiver.

 

Not that I know of. Early 911's used Repa for production cars and race cars. AutoFlug were also used on lightweights and race cars.

My Dino's belts were changed with DOT belts when imported in '77 but retained the original Klippan mounting bolts/holes to mount them. I believe different markets had different belts. *03932* is Italian spec. I'm sure Matthias will chime in soon to set us all straight!

Im not sure about Porsche, but I think some VWs had very simolar Klippan belts as used in the Dino...

 

I never knew that. Have mostly seen Repa in VW's since 1968 til the 90's. Didn't BMW use Klippans?

 

I remember those Klippan belts. The parents' Saab 95 stationwagon had them. I absolutely hated them, because they were difficult to adjust and locked you in place so you couldn't reach for anything. I probably should include here that that car was sold when I was about 9. They did have a nice mechanism though and I liked all the chrome even then. Click, click.

Moral of the story, if you absolutely want them, the older Saabs (and maybe Volvos) could be the place to look.

What years/markets for VW Bus? Have only seen Repa since '68. First time I have found a set of Klippans at a Porsche or VW swap meet. On early BMW 2002's I read they used the 'claw' type Klippan that attatched to a center chrome loop. So still a mystery to me who else uses a similar Klippan as the Dino/Daytona.

Here's some Klippan belt part numbers with the same buckles as fitted to several Dino models, these are all tagged 1969 I think.

407 BE (2002)
517
407 B (one of these last two is off a mercedes, don't recall which one)

You need to be a little careful, the "LYFE LOCK ..." stamped lettering might be different for the same part numbers.
Other than that, they appear identical to the 517RP for my L and others I've looked at.

Looks the same as mine with ~2.5mm high letters vs. ~3.5mm.
Just based on what I've seen on known original parts in L-series, only seen the ones with smaller lettering.
I'm not claiming all variations weren't original as these belts were put in alot of Dinos, and I'm interested to see original examples from M and early E-series.

 

The point of this thread was that I found these in a bin with other misc seat belts at a Porsche swap meet. I have no idea what they came off. They are the same as a Dino/Daytona 3 point belt except the grey webbing. I think it's fun to find out of place stuff. Day before at the Porsche Lit Meet I found a period Nardi small diameter wheel that looked correct for a 206. My friend bought it. After getting it home he found out it was a 275GTB wheel. Fun part is not paying Ferrari prices! Venders don't always know what they have!

Hi guys, FYI, I found a set of Klippan seat belts for my L series. see photos. They will need to be restored but should not be a problem. They came from a BMW 2002 from 1972 in case someone is still looking. Good hunting. Filippo

Hi all,
How is the general opinion regarding re-using the old seat belt webbing when restoring these old Klippan belts? I have always been told that older or misused webbing should be changed out for security reasons. I am currently in the process of restoring my L series belts and I am finding it hard to find new webbing that looks like the old Klippan stuff, are there anyone that has any good hints?

yes, that`a difficult one......

 

Easy-

If you intend to drive the car when finished & value your life which I am sure you do, then fit good quality belts a sod the originality. If anyone looks to closely, draw your right foot back and take aim
