Posted in the Lambo section, but applies to a recent discussion on Ferrari's styling direction equally well.

On The Lamborghini Veneno and the Masculinization of Supercar Design | The Chicane

    1. Great blog, for those into vintage racing and sports cars.

    2. Apt commentary on the current state of exotic car design:

"Something has happened in the past 20 years of sportscar design. There’s nothing elegant about this Lamborghini. It looks cold and mechanical and dangerous. We’ve stopped caring about machines looking beautiful and settled for them looking angry or dangerous..."

Another guy put it really well... its too masculine. It's like looking at some guy on Muscle Beach in Venice.

Personally, I like the women on the beach in Cannes, Miami, or Malibu. :)

Honestly, this car is just over the top to be over the top.

Why is this news to anyone? Lamborghini hasn't produced a "pretty" car since the Miura. They let Ferrari do that.......but now of course even Ferrari has abandoned elegance.

Like Bob said, Lambos are muscular cars for masculine men.

I don't know, I think that the 6.0 Diablo is "pretty" and is a clean, refined shape.

Not a fan. It looks like an overdone transformer turned into a kit car. I'm sure it's an amazing driving machine, but looks-wise, it's a disaster.

Good God --- it IS the Batmobile !

What did you expect, the majority of Lambos are designed for one singular purpose ---- getting attention. This car will have no trouble meeting that design goal.

Amen. It was definitely an outrageous car, but even with that extreme geometry it's cohesive. Outrageous but beautifully designed by someone who knew what he was doing (Gandini).

'Beauty' can come in many forms. Some like thin women with short hair...some like them curvy with long hair.

Rewind back to the Countach 500S and the Testarossa and you see two not very pretty cars. The Testarossa has really awkward proportions and is, for its day, just as ungainly as this new Lambo. Lambo took the beautiful LP400 and made it the first Transformer with the 500S

This new car may not be pretty....may not follow classic proportions...but its super outrageous and to me thats cool.

Lamborghini has not made a nice looking car since the Muira (as stated above). The Countash is no where as pretty as the Muira.

Ferrari, over the last 3 decades has been hit-or-miss. The BBoxer was very pretty in 365 form, the TR can be left in the garage, then we have the beautiful 355 the somewhat pretty 348, the ungamely 360/430, then the beautiful 458.

Looking forward Ferrari is brining design in house after Pinninfarinna went south. Time will tell.

You're either a fan of the wedge.. or you're not. I'm not a fan, it had its time before the wind tunnel defined a cars shape (as it should).

As I have a 360, I'm biased. But I think the rear hips of the car and the gentle coke bottle waist remind me of a model sun-tanning on the beach. It's a softer more feminine shape than the 430 that, while chiselled, is more aggressive. 458 exemplifies the rear quarterpanel and feminine waist.

Lambo. Built to be noticed, agree that more lines and folds is not necessarily better in a design. Latest lambo is exotic.. perhaps too much so IMHO.

This car is simply tood bad to be truth...a company like Lamborghini should have a litle more respect for it´s history...on the other hand, thinking on some previous models they where just doing that!!!!

I would need to see the badge to know it wasn't a Lambo Veneno.

They all look more or less the same.

The marriage has to be between beauty and the ability to seriously perform.

I've always wanted an '89 countach - but driving it isn't ideal.

Buyers today seem to be focused on the mentality of 'my car can outrun your car' - and companies are building to that mentality.

I agree that the new lambo is seriously off. I wouldn't even begin to think about acquiring one. The new Ferrari - well.. That's a completely different story - just wish it had a different name.

Man, I couldn't agree more...the 308 and F40's were my idols...now I think they look dated (although the F40 still manages to get me)...the 90's were my Ferrari obsession with the 348 and the 355... I dont think I obsessed over any car more in the 90's then the F355, and almost as much the 348 (I just wish they had kept the cheese graters and front bumper from the 348 when they made the 355, but still the F355's elegence was unmatched...I still this day will watch the movie 'The Rock' just to see that scene)

Ferrari lost me with the 360, then got a little of it back with F340 but only slightly more...but Lambo ruled my world in the first decade of the 2000's with the murci and the gallardo, they were heads and tails such much more of a beautiful car (to me of course...just IMO)......

then the 458 hit and I was obsessed again with a Ferrari...for the first time (in comparative dollars) I would choose a Ferrari, the 458, over the Murci or the Gallardo...
