Ferrari wanted him, then RB came to the party and matched their offer, Webber thinks he has a better chance of winning in a RB, the end.

I dunno - when I look at replays of old F1 races some of the "top" drivers get pwnt on race starts. Senna comes to mind easily. That or some one always sprinkled sand on his starting grid spot almost every race...

Rossberg and Button are not top 5 anymore. In order to be top five you need to be in a top 3 team. Today it's Red Bull and Ferrari in the top 2 and it could be MB or Renault or even Force India these days. McLaren are a fading force, like a hurricane turning into a wet drizzle.

So you're normalizing the top 5 for the performance of the car? In that case, I'd agree with you... but I am curious who you rank as top 5 in that case?

Webber has always been a great #2 driver. His only failing is that he thinks he can win a WDC. Massa suffers from the same affliction - but I agree with you that Webber is better than Massa, but not by a whole lot. He has no excuses this year - and he's morally justified in ignoring team orders to take a back seat to Vettel... so whatever he achieves this year is only representative of his talent, minus the points he "lost" with the Vettel overtake.

Surely ALL of them think they could win the WDC in the right car with the right backing.

There are no "nice guys" on the grid.

    Couldn't they ??

Massa and Webber have BOTH come close but I feel sorrier for Massa , when Glock slowed and let Hamilton through that was a low act, Webber only had himself to blame, his missus should have slapped him around like Wayne Gardiner's missus did before a race to get him geed up :p

OK. It will take a lot more than three races for Macca to find anything. Without Hamilton they have lost the development instinct.
Button is blue collar driver. He works hard in a race with what he is given but he has no instinct for improving a car like Schumacher, Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel

In today's cars The top four IMO are Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton, Raikkonen. Webber is #5, simply because of the Red Bull. Put him in anything other than a Red Bull and he becomes a field filler.
Massa could be # 5 in Webber's place also because of the car.
If McLaren find something they currently don't have, Button gets a shot at #5 too
