Well and then there is Silverstone 2008 where he spun on his own.

That's nothing, I've spun at few points on the Silverstone circuit during clubs days :p

Touch the white lines in the wrong place and you get on the merry-go-round :)

Right. Given his stellar track record in recent years one really has to look hard to find a reason to bash him.

As mentioned recently: Massa is now the Ferrari driver who has been driving the car for the longest period of time without winning a race.

Massa seems to know is place in the pecking order. He is the number two driver behind Alonso and has let him pass him on multiple occasions as well as taken penalties to move Alonso up (Austin). He pulled off a masterful block at the start of Malaysia and let Alonso jump right to second. Alonso got a little aggressive and hit Vettel. I only wish Massa could have shown his true driving ability when Alonso was no longer part of the race. IMHO they have great teamwork and synergy. RB is likely to take each other out and give Ferrari a 1 - 2 finish soon!

And they should remember that the cars ran traction control in 2007 - wet or dry, put your foot down and let the computer sort it out. Also they should watch to note how often each driver was fully 4 wheels off the track - and recall the rules that disallow racing or overtaking in that circumstance. IF Mosley's lapdog ("Chief Steward" Donnelly) had been enforcing the rules for that incident, both drivers would have earned multiple penalties. IMHO, that clip is not an example of good, much less great, driving.

That one, and 5 more spins all on his own. To his credit, it must take a lot of skill to spin 6 times in a race without hitting anything!

So, neither driver gets a tick for skill or bravery ?

    That was embarrassing for him

Bravery, maybe. Skill, no - because of the way they each ran the other driver off the track, rather than leaving them room to race as they tend to do last year and this year (maybe only because of the new rules in that regard). Sticking your nose down the inside, then running to the track edge and forcing the other guy off is not great racing skill, imho.

You're a hard man to please, flatout, in torrential rain, going off the track and STILL fighting for that place with very limited vision, TC or not that was some ballsy driving by both drivers

Enzo did not like his drivers to get married as he thought it took away from their "competitiveness." aka horny is faster. Really.

Well and then there is the baby rule: Every child costs you 0.1 sec per lap because you're no longer that insane/100% committed to go into every turn and braking zone.

A "rule" that seemed to be true for some but certainly not all. Never seemed to have bothered MS when he was on top.

Yes but if you listen to Chris Amon all that play out of the car took away his focus. The way his eyes light up and he grins ... heck I can only imagine the stories that he could tell.

If only he could have put 80% of that focus into being, what modern people like to call, professional.

    Not weird at all IMHO.

I'm the one who keeps preaching about the value of stats. Everything else are just excuses.

If Massa keeps outqualifying Alonso then it simply means Massa gets more out of the car than Alonso over one lap. No buts/ifs/couldas and wouldas.

    On that one day.

But if the conditions are rapidly changing (or other parameters out of a driver's control),... one should be careful making too much of the statistics.

That said,... I don't think anyone would deny Massa's performance dropped dramatically after his 2009 crash,... and has improved nearly as dramatically since mid-late 2012.

Good for Massa. I felt really sorry for him the last 2 seasons. He was like a Boxer past his prime just getting pummeled in every fight. Now he's back on form. He must feel great within. Glad to see it.

    A one time event isn't really a statistic. That's a data point.

    Both true.
