I've always had a taste for the unusual when it came to cars. Back in the 80's, most of my teenage friends were buying used Firebirds and Camaros. I had my eye on an early 70's Corvette Stingray, but on my meager summer golf caddy earnings, I couldn't afford one.

To my delight, the 1969 Opel GT had the lines of a Corvette, was made in Germany, and was within my price range. I even had some $ left over to install twin Weber carburetors and an Ansa exhaust system. The pop-up headlights (they actually spun around) were a cool feature which operated by a manual hand lever - no motors to burn out. It was a lovable car which sadly ended up rusting to pieces.

I'm curious what current Mondial owners were driving back in the High School days. Let's see your first set of wheels! :)

Trivia: Maxwell Smart drove an Opel GT in a few of the original Get Smart tv episodes.

No pic, but the first car I drove around was a 1972 Mazda RX2. Dark green 4 door. What a fantastic little ride. Light weight, made of tin foil but with 0 or 1 passengers it flew. That early rotary engine cranked up beautifully. Alas at about 50k on that motor it was shot and went to the wrecker.

I did have it up to 115mph one time before someone from the back seat started crying for me to slow down. I do recall at that speed weaving side to side across a couple lanes on purpose and finding the control at that speed to be fantastic. What other 1972 econo car could pull that off?

I also had an Opel GT for a while. Dark green metallic, 1969. Ran great, what a fun car. Gave it to my brother who destroyed it. Still have a soft spot for that car.

Love the green color on that wagon, Greg. Looks like it was an early Country Squire.

Holy Cow Greg, that Midget looks familiar! Today I came home and had my last drive in my 69. The transporter will be picking her up tomorrow. Sad day, I will miss this little car, she runs great! I did double my money when I sold it but what a sweet car. ...Well, don't feel bad for me, next week I get the Porsche delivered. New project!!! :):):)

    Cheers

I had a hunch there was another Mondial owner who owned an Opel GT.

Greg, it must have been a 429 not a 427. The 27 ended in 68. Very different motor.

Memories, memories. my first car was a Lancia Beta Coupe, less than 3 years old at the time and was so amazing. Nicknamed the poor mans Ferrari, it was an amazing car to drive and used it every day to go college.

Shame about the rust issues, Lancia was pulled from the UK market in the 90s due to poor quality. It was was one of my all time favourites!

The 68 Ford Thunderbird with suicide doors. Yeah, I was styling in high school....not! What a boat. It used to bottom out around a curve and everything worked by vacuum. So much torque, really didn't sound like it was revving when you floored it. But it did have a tilt-away steering wheel. This isn't my car, but similar. Mine was baby blue.

1967 Morris Minor 1000. Drove it until it finally rusted out underneath to the point of being dangerous. That is to say more dangerous than it already was with no seat belts, no crash protection and a single channel braking system.

my first car was a former state police car - 1974 BelAir Wagon - 400CI with a quadrajet carb - made great noises when you hit it and opened up the second butterfly. Had this maybe a 2 years until it needed new tires, replaced with a '78 Ford Fiesta ( the ones that came from Germany)

(Pics are not my actual cars - but from the net - each the same color and model of what I had)

My first car was a Pontiac Ventura. I think it was a 1976?
It had no floors, the trunk was held shut with duct tape and it was covered with rust.
One day while driving home from class it literally caught on fire. Flames were coming through the rust holes in the trunk. The fire eventually went out, I fixed the wiring and bulb sockets and sold it for $200.00 as is, which was what I had paid for it two years previous.
In a way it was the best car I have ever had. That thing wouldn't die.

Reminds me I need to dig out old pictures to post. Bought a 1946 Willys CJ-2A when I was 14 (1978) rebuilt from ground up as well as a 14-16 yr old can do without a stocked shop. Fond memories. Accompanied shortly after with a 1972 Opel GT. $125 basket case, but loved it. 1977 Ford Bronco followed. Wish I still had all three.

Bought a beautiful '68 Mehari in '71, days before I could get my D/L at 18. Worked on it the following month and then drove it all the way from Paris to Persepolis - and back!

My next car, a few years later, was a '67 Pontiac GP.

Yeah, I am open minded. :)

My first car was a 1967 Cutlass Supreme nicknamed "The Tank". One day a car crashed into a car which in turned hit "the tank". My license plate was bent but nothing to the bumper. The other cars were total losses.

    Miss that car.

The one pictured in not mine but the same color scheme.

My first car was a 1994 VW Jetta GLS. It had the same wheel covers as this one, but it was red and had no spoiler. It was automatic, because my parents wouldn't let me have a stick-shift for my first car. It was slower than the second coming of Christ, but it was a set of wheels and I had freedom, which is what it is all about at that age.
